Ok so finally bought me a vitara :d couldn't be happier.

Took it wheeling and then the problems started.

Drove up a hill and had a horrible burning smell. Rode the clutch a tiny bit but nothing chronic. Then went to change gears an wouldn't go in.

So figured I burnt the clutch went to adjust it and it was almost at it's limit.

Worked well.... Next hill the clutch burnt again. Same problem.

Was at it's limit.... Adjusted it a tiny bit and worked fine. Got it home and went to duck to the shops and gears wouldn't select again.

I had a good look and seemed like the cable was stretched. Put a temp spacer in the cable now have plenty of adjustment :s

Clutch engages when pedle is halfway out (when I got it it engaged as soon as it was off the floor)

My questions are:

Why did the clutch burn so easily?
Why did I have to adjust it so much?

Now that I have a spacer in it and it's working. Is that a good sign that it's not the clutch and just needs a cable?

Also, my starter keeps spinning even after the cars started? Is there a way to fix that or just buy a new one?

I'm guessing Clutch cable. Working well now. But then again I haven't done any offroad since the spacer.

One thing I did notice. The arm that the cable connects to. The shaft that goes into the gearbox wobbles when you press the peddle. Like the bush is flogged out.
Thrush bearing is a bit noisy.... Wasn't when I bought it though.

Guess I'll try the cable first. Jus don't know why it burnt so easily.

Pics soon :) on the camera.

What makes you think that?
Clutch is quite heavy? I've heard heavy duty clutches stretch cables and snap them easily... Could it possibly just be the cable?

Worked fine this arvo. Then all of sudden went to change down gears and it wouldn't go in !!!!
Didn't burn the clutch or anything.

There is no weight on the pedle. Hope it's just a snapped cable but something tells me it's more.

Where's the cheapest place to buy a clutch? And who wants to help me put it in ??? :d

Well had a look. The cable isn't snapped. However the arm is a fai way back. (clutch doesn't even feel like it's engaging.

Clutch arm is all the way back. When I adjust it it moves in a fair way.

To me it seems either the cable is stretching like crazy or the actual arm is slipping on the shaft??

sounds like the arm is slipping on the spline of the shaft...

pull the cable out and have a good look, especially where it bends around the bottom radiator hose

its a late 95, early 96 going by the dash?
they are a different cable to the ebay one, you have a rubber bung on the block mount

the genuine ones are crap, suzisport ones are crap, I have a sierra one from suzistore, has lasted the longest of them all but you need to make a new mount on the block

If it has a heavy duty clutch buy a few so you can change it monthly :) but I think in your case its been installed wrong and thats caused the problem

Yeah before I bought the car aMechanic had re-greased the cable so they must have installed it wrong.

So when they are kinked like so, would that stretch the cable like it has been.
Kind of doesn't explain why it burnt so easily? Does it?
The inner cable isn't kinked. Just got a curve from the outer....

lol, you cant regrease them they dont come apart

the inner doesnt stretch, the outer collapses which has the same effect
what happens is the heat from teh bottom hose softens it and the pressure from holding in teh clutch stretches it till it splits, this is all made worse from 4wding cause its low sped lots of clutch use so it doesnt get to cool

mine goes between the hose and the alt, with some hose around it to try and stop some heat

Well about 10 minutes work and $77 later.

My dear old Tara was back purring like she should be...I hope this had fixed it. I think I need to put a lock nut on the adjuster. Pedal position is different now to when I took her out.

Thought as much.

I took it out for about 45 minutes and I didn't need to adjust it once. Plus there is a fair bit of thread left on the adjuster (about half way)....

I could kiss you Royce :d
