Post subject:  Oversized pistons, what else do I need?
Hey guys, to get my 1.6L bored out to fit .020 over sized pistons, what else do I have to get done ? Or is that it? Im guess bigger rings yes.

I tried searching but couldnt find anything.

Rings to suit pistons
Maby a bigger head gasket or ur standard one might still work
I had to change mine when I went to 40 thou

Make sure you supply the pistons when the block is machined so they are matched correctly, rings should come with the pistons, they will need to be gapped correctly. If it's a 8v g13/16 the pistons are semi floaters and will require the pistons fitted to the rods.

You'll be able to fit the pistons to the conrod urself just make sure you give the shop ur piston and rings to go off

You'll never get more the a 1.7l
I'm pretty sure you can only go to 60 thou before you engine gets weak

Oh okay cool, yeah wasnt sure what it would work out to be, is there a big difference in power putting bigger pistons? What about fuel economy too? Im not fussed on that but

Well I've only done 300km on my full rebuild
Been sitting for six months
Yes I felt bit more power as you would with every thing nice nd rebuilt
The problem I had was the fuel
It drank like a thirsty camel
Think it was cos of a fresh rebuild but the carb was still a shitter

Can I ask why you would go through all that time,money and effort on a nice rebuilt engine then hang a shitty performing carb on it that could possibly cause damage?

Didn't have the money at the time hence why my parents payed for the engine
I wasn't gonna scab more money one it
The carb was perfect before the rebuild never let me down
But u are right I think I did big damage
Thats why it's parked up

Was going up my drive way nd it decided to dye in revs
Foot down nd only revved to 1500rpm
Fuel comes out of the carb instead of going in the cylinders

Know what it could be?

Stuck float maybe or blocked return lines. Either which way I reckon it would be a good idea to park it until you scrape enough together to get that carb or what ever else sorted so you have no issues or potential problems with this new engine you have invested your borrowed coin into.

Yea I havnt touched it for 6 months since that day
The engine will be going in my new project so will have a full rebuilt carb this time
Hopefully I didn't do ny internal damage to the engine

+0.020 oversize is what's considered "first" oversize on these engines - it's the size of the first rebore on an engine with worn bores - you won't need a new head gasket.

The oversized pistons should be supplied with matching rings, new wrist pins & if necessary circlips - the important thing here is to have the block checked by a competent machinist before purchasing anything - he will measure the bores and let you know how far out of round they are and how much of an oversize you need.

By the way - I've seen Royce preaching this quite often recently.

One last suggestion - if you need to ask what's needed - take the rods along when you drop the block & the pistons off to have it bored - let the machinist put them together.

How many parts do you in a piston engine that contain the letters "r, o & d" in that sequence?

Do I have to spell it out? C-o-n-n-e-c-t-i-n-g r-o-d - got it now?

Sure you should be rebuilding a motor if you don't know what a rod is?

You will need-
Pistons and rings of the appropiate size
full gasket/seal set
full set of bearings of appropiate size
new oil pump
new timing belt
New rod bolts and maybe head bolts/studs

You will need to have done-
bore and hone block
check deck for staightness and have machined as necessary
check crank for wear and straightness and machined as necessary
Check conrods for size and machine as necessary
check head for straightness and machine as necessary
check valves/seats and machine/replace as necessary

You need to be able to check bearing clearances on assembly
You will need to be able to check/measure alll other componets for wear before assembly and replace as necessary.
you will need to be able to clean everything (really clean) before assembly



.............Or you can just throw it together and hope for the best :D

Well yes a rod but I call it a conrod So wasn't sure if he ment some other rod
Btw you don't need a shop to put ur pistons on your conrod
Took me under ten minutes to do all 4

No you don't - but - you do need to know that the piston has a thrust face and goes on the rod in a particular direction - and - any one who needs to ask if oversize rings are needed for oversize pistons, probably needs to be told which way the pistons go - hence my suggestion.

A good thing to remember is look or right down the way you pull apart things
It helps in the end
