Post subject:  Wheel studs

The other week I replaced a wheel stud, well it's actually one of 4 studs on the axle that hold the brake drum on, but now it seems like the spline on the back of it that holds it in place has rounded, when I inspected it the groves didn't look too deep but it still locked into place.

What I wanted to know is, is there a way to repair it, or do I have to replace the axle.

And how would I remove the drum when the stripped stud spins around.

thanks

None of the wheel studs or rear axle to brake drum studs are splined. They should be smooth sided with a D shaped head that locks against the hub or brake drum. Like THIS or This. Front wheel studs and rear axle to drum are 42mm long, rear wheel studs are 37mm long.

If you've used a splined stud and it's turning, all you can do is grind off the nut and press out the remains of the stud.

I've forgotten to mention it's for a vitara. I thought it would be unlikely they'd be different to other zooks but the one I removed is splined.

(The photo's I took of it doesn't show it)

OK, so it's for a Vit. Story's still the same.
