I was thinking of making some heavier duty shakles for my sierra think the standard ones look pretty weak what thickness steel should i use, and what size bolts fit through the bushes correctly. I will be keeping them the same length as standard maybe 1" longer not sure yet is it worth doinig or are the standard shakles strong enough. |

Fatzook sells a set of extended shackles and i dont think they cost that much just give TSOR a look up. |

have looked at those they look the goods but don't want to go 2" extended was looking to keeep them standard length or a little bit longer |

Many a zook around, 25 years or older, running the OEM shackles, still in perfect order. Unless they have rusted to death, or been hit hard, I cannot see any need for upgrading, strength wise. |

cool well i might not bother was just after some thought on there strength and from what i have read on here extending them makes the car drive worse on the road if iam not mistaken? |

I took home made extended shakles out and replaced with originals, springs work better, ride is better, steering is better. |

Mine are made from 40 x 8 flat bar. Bush size is 13mm. Not liking the idea of bolts i made up stepped pins as per origional, so the side plate pulls up to a shoulder on the pin. |

Yeah the standard ones are fine, you can get new standard ones too if yours are rusted. Yeah it'll drive worse on the road, it'll roll around and stuff your bushes faster too. |

I cannot see any need for upgrading, so long as you never drive your car most of the Sierra's I've pulled apart over the last 10 years have had cracked or terribly worn shackles. The worst I've seen have been almost cracked right through - within millimeters of falling in half. I had a collection of them I used to show people to freak them out. It's not a problem confined to wrecks or anything to do with rust. Steve. |

reading this thread i am starting to ponder the benefits of extending shackles, so many people boast that theirs are bigger, what's the point then if it screws things up? |

the only reason to run a longer shackle is if you are running a longer spring.. thats the end of it... |

no thats not quite the end of it alien, it should read the only reason to run a longer shackle is if you are running a longer spring and you are too slack to do it properly and move the mounts.. thats the end of it.. |

=D true. although i've done both (longer shackles and moved the mounts) - but i fitted wayyyy different springs. |

haha nar i did it with a mate first... we just didnt do a great job so then i took it to be done properly =) |
