My Dad is a Pom and a mechanic
As you would imagine he has seen a lot of rusty shitboxes, goes with teh territory of owning a car in England
He told me a story once of a local Jag dealer offering Bitumen coating as a sure fire method of rust proofing, no more rust or cleaning they reckoned
So what happened?
All these Jags running around and not being cleaned off underneath ever, a stone would chip the paint and the alt would seep in and rust the floor away and nobody would notice because the paint hid it, till somebody put their foot through the floor
I think thorough cleaning is the best method, anything sticky outside is no good cause sand sticks to it
i have used Shell Ensis fluid before, not sticky, sets flexible, but doesnt last forever so it pays to reapply before the yearly big trip
