Just keen to hear what you guys use for rust prevention- especially from the blokes that do a bit of beach driving?

I've been using a 50/50 mix of engine oil and diesel sprayed from a 12 lt weed sprayer. Seems good, gets in all those hard to get spots, though it smells a bit and kills ya lawn. Any better / cleaner ideas out there? I'd still like to stick with the DYI liquid approch though.

Cheers,

Phil

Lanolin Gold Liquid Lanolin if you reapply it occasionally.

the absoute best stuff is a german made pariffin cavity wax that contains a sacrifical zinc . the name escapes me at the moment, but it never really sets , is totally waterproof and lasts for about 10 years.

cavity waxes are sooo much better than fish oils or lanolin its not funny. but you need to get it inside the cavity of the panel for any to work properly as panels rust from the inside out.

My Dad is a Pom and a mechanic

As you would imagine he has seen a lot of rusty shitboxes, goes with teh territory of owning a car in England

He told me a story once of a local Jag dealer offering Bitumen coating as a sure fire method of rust proofing, no more rust or cleaning they reckoned

So what happened?

All these Jags running around and not being cleaned off underneath ever, a stone would chip the paint and the alt would seep in and rust the floor away and nobody would notice because the paint hid it, till somebody put their foot through the floor :)

I think thorough cleaning is the best method, anything sticky outside is no good cause sand sticks to it
i have used Shell Ensis fluid before, not sticky, sets flexible, but doesnt last forever so it pays to reapply before the yearly big trip

So where did you buy the Pariffin wax from? Also, can it be "sprayed" or is it too think?

No-one mentioned fish oil?

I bet for everything that crackpot says, 100 real experts in the field weep for Humanity

Of course Cathodic protection doesnt work on something not mostly immersed in water, its a big pity none of the effective electronic systems are a cathodic system
