Has anyone heard about installing magnets on the outside of the engine oil filter before to catch any small bits of metal shavings?

Something like this:

Does it have any merit?

bust off a ring magnet from the back of a car audio speaker, put that on the sump so the drain plug is in the middle, just before doing an oil change pull the magnet off & drain

yer i used the magnets from old busted external hard drives. when cut open there is shavings stuck to it. but saying that i'm sure if it is good catching the metal shavings in the filtter or not kinda defeats the purpose of the magnet on the sump plug.

Yes it will catch metal but so will your oil FILTER thats what its for
