40PSI!!!!!! WTF?!

i run 31s on my sierra - 26psi front and 22psi rear (this is with Kumho KL71)... with BFG KM2 i run 24psi front and 20 rear... with simex ET i ran 20 front and 18 rear.

offroad the KL71s get 9psi, the KM2 get 8psi and the simexs got as low as i dared which was 6psi.

theres a tyre placard inside the drivers door (sometimes) - this should give you a PSI for standard sized tyres, and is a good place to start no matter what size you're running.

I still cant believe people over inflate their tyres so much

I'd read on other forums about these heavy (high) tyre pressures, and I know from running around in my fuel guzzling Jeep that 40 pounds would near throw me out the front window- or at least compress a few disk in my back...

I was hoping to hear around 20 lb was right, as I'm a lazy bugger and I'd like to drive straight from the road onto the sand with no adjustment. Though I know a lower setting again would be better for the beach.

So at say 20 lb, would road ware be pretty even? Or is it wiser to opt for 25 lb or so?

I plan to rotate them every 10,000 kays or so.

For a Vitara, what tyre pressure you guys are running in your MT tyres? I realise this is a little open ended as there are so many different terains etc, but for just general driving around the streets and a short offroad stint, what pressure would you run? Cheers, Phil

In my g16a powered Vit with maxxis bighorns 235/75's I run 40psi for normal road driving. I only run this when doing highway driving or I run out of boondi with any lower pressures. Offroad where the car spends 80% of it's life is between 8-15psi depending on terrain.

I was running 32psi all round and thought was bit rough on 31s put it down to about 26 and seems ok. Can understand winding it up abit for highway thought 40 is bit much.

Yep, check the tyre placard on the door recess, run them at that first and see how you go... from memory i think its 24psi...

my 31" MT/R's run at 29psi cold on the road & usually between 12-10psi warm off road, will usually have another check in the morning for cold pressures if doing an overnighter/weekender.

31x11.5 claw on a 7 inch rim on a 1.6 4 door vitara. on road 30 -34 light track work 20 hard tracks/ beach work 6- 12.

40 is a pretty terrifying pressure imo in a little light zook. even up 30ish is frightful. I run claws, 31s at 22 up front and 20 rears, thats in me lwb maruti. Any more and its getting to harsh on the blacktop, and on the dirt roads, even that is a bit high.

run 25 all round in my 31s, both my xterrains and claws, dont even run 40 in nissans or toyotas, normally between 32 and 34

I will give 30 psi a go today as we have a 4x4 run out of town. As for running higher pressures I think I stated why, but mind you i'll give 25-32 for on road a go. So much anger this morning geez...

you need to test it... drop pressure and then roll over some talcum powder on the driveway to see how much tyre is contacting the road... i usually have about 1" of the tread face each side not touching and this proves to be right for the 4psi rule (after a highway drive they go up 4psi). the softer you go the more wallowy it will feel in corners too, as the sidewalls will flex more.

I run 40psi in my Prado. I ran 20psi in my Sierra on road and 10 offroad. I run 50psi in my work van (current Hiace)

Cheers, Phil Just dont forget, running a tyre under inflated on the road, will build up more heat than normal pressure, and shorten the life of the tyre... i would strongly suggest running the tyre placard pressure for onroad ! Tyre fitters seeem to think that all tyres should have 32psi in them, when i had my AT's fitted, the ride was very harsh, the tyres would skip over rail lines and crab sideways, checked tyre pressure, 32psi... Zooks are Light, they dont need anything over 25psi ! I know he might be a bit tired of repeating himself, but Greg Dixon is the tyre man...
