Got a set of alloy wheels on the Vitara that need a good clean up to get ready for some new mud tyres. They have a clear coating over the alloy that is yellowish and basically looks crap. I've tried removing it with wet n dry, which kinda works but is far too tedious and slow. I was thinking of using something like paint striper to get it off? Anyone had a simular battle with clear coat, and will the paint striper damage the tyre- not that I plan to get any one them? Basically I'm over sanding them... Pic 1) I had a bit of a go at sanding the clear coat off and quite. Pic 2) The end resul;t of 55 minutes with wet n dry. Shiny and no clear coat but friggen hard work!! |

paint stripper will work and shouldnt hurt the rubber but will screw around with the black onthem. you will also have to polish them after ward cos paint stripper will dull the alloy |

Thanks mate. Yeah, didn't think the paint stripper would hurt the tyre (not that I care with the old ones on it), but didn't think about the black between the spokes. Hmmm, I'll just paint it on very neatly and avoid the black, then blast it off with the hose. Too easy... I hope. Cheers, Phil |

Gasket stripper works a treat too. Follow that with a good alloy polish, then prep them up and clearcoat them again, or the alloy will oxidise and you'll find yourself polishing them every second weekend. |
