Hey guys.
I've now got a 40mm lift on my 2000 GV & I'm looking to put some new tyres on in the 245/70R16 size next week, I've been looking through the forum but couldn't find much information about that size on a G.V. Does anyone know if this size will be fine when it comes to fitting/rubbing? There's not many options in the 235/60R16 range & I don't want to go any skinny like 225 or that bit higher with 245's.
As far as I can see, with that size tyre I would like should make me appox 8kph out higher on the speedo, but a tyre dealer said I should be close to the proper posted speed limit as the current 235's are under speed?
Any advice appreciated, thanks
Paul

They are going to rub plenty. That's why you haven't seen much data on anyone running them. Clearance around the front edge of the rear wheelarch/door will become a big issue.
There's a reason everyone runs 225/75/16's - that's as much as can fit without having to do lots of guard work.
The 10mm loss of width isn't relevant to capability.

I run 235/70/16. only rub at full lock and only just. thats with 25mm spacers in the front.
on the back there is about 10mm clearence and thats with the rubber mud flap missing. I have 40mm springs and 50mm spacer.
I reckon that's as big as you can go without taking bits of plasitc off. i have a 02 gv.

I don't think it's the plastic that's the problem, it's the rear wheelarch, which is covered by the door. Opening that up requires lots of metalwork on the door and arch.
It's the same area that's the biggest problem on the 4 door vitara, but the guard starts out bigger on the vitara, so it's less of a restriction.
Steve.

Ok thanks guys, that's interesting. One of the tyres I was looking at was the new Cooper AT3 in 245/70/16, because on the Bridgestone site they say the D694 don't come in LT construction on their website.
So are you guys saying it's the "width" of the 245's thats the problem not the the "70/75 height" that cuases the rubbing issues Thanks.

I'm currently going through lots of different tyre compaines to see what they make in LT construction, one of the things I'm worried about is ***/75/16 tyres [75] putting my speedo to far out & needing a speedo correction kit.

I use this tyre calculator alot when figuring out tyre sizes on different cars. http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Tyres/SizeCalc.aspx
The 225/75 and 245/70 are only 6mm different in diameter
I cant see why a 245/70R16 wont fit. Yes it will rub a bit when offroading and at full lock.
Im planing of fitting some 31inch or equal size tyre on mine. just need to find another 2 to use as a trial set.

Tombutt runs 245/70 r16 on his SV vitara. As G-wagen said, you have slightly less room, so any clearance issues will be compounded.
Are you against panelwork in general? Or just looking for the easiest option?

If your going to run larger tyres then you should look at changing diff gears.

Ok thanks guys, it's an interesting one, I just wouldn't mind a bit more upsize/lift from the stock 60 size tyre but without doing any body/panelwork or changing diff ratio's if possible. Plans for it's use is light & medium grade trips carrying some camping gear. Thanks.

for starters what drive r u doing to need LT rated tyres if u r drive beach stuff and need the tyres to bag then go with a pasenger tyre but if u want a tyre for offf road then go LT rated tyre .
Coopers new AT3 is LT but in pasenger contructsion so will bag will. If ur car is a GV go with 235 70 r16 they will ride nicer than 225?75R16 due to this tyre being a soild LT tyre.

Hi, no sand work, Lithgow districts mixed trail conditions mainly when offroad.

Ok so for wanting a bit of tyre lift height from the "60" size stock tyre & having to do no or as little panel/body work as possible from rubbing & with the 40mm lift already I'm not wanting to do any spacer/body block lift or diff ratio changing - then, I should be looking at "235/70/16" & not 245/70/16 or 225/75/16.
I'll have to check to see what LT's are made in this size, I'm really open to all brands of tyres though if they'll do the job [Mainly Lithgow area stuff]
Sorry about the questions guy's - I haven't had the G.V for too long, so I appreciate all feedback, thanks.

225/75R16 will fit and all you have to do is remove the mud flaps.
The tyre choice is totally up to you. find something you like and in your price range.

I'm not worried by the price of the tyres, so that's cool & not really worried about the brand of AT - just worried about parting with the coin on the wrong size tyres.
It's all interesting information for me.

You have the same gearing and clearance issues with 245's as you do with the 225's. If you want the wider tyre go for it. The 694 is getting canned and being replaced with 697 similar pattern though.

225/75/16 or 245/70/16

Looking at Cooper AT3 or D694 atm with those above sizes, not much made in LT in 235

the 245v is 20mm wider in the tread and 6mm taller so it will rub more att full lock.
Use the tyre calculator below to compare tyre sizes.

Go a 245/70/16 in an all terrain or a 225/75/16 in a mud tyre

I read the 4WDAction article on AT tyres, the Yokohama AT-s sounds good but not avalible in LT [says tyre shops] , D694's don't read as good as I'd hope, Maxxis 700/771 not LT according to 2 different tyre shops, so the 225/75/16 Cooper AT3's are looking good at the moment
But I had Cooper ST's & STT's on my 100Series Cruiser before & they were crap - they chipped to the shithouse
When I get this tyre issue sorted out, I'll start a page in the rigs section.

I read that too... but i would take it with a pinch of salt... as they are not very unbiased in their opinions/testing...
Dont know what tyre shop told you the Maxxis 700/771 is not available in LT, but they are telling you a BS story, i have LT225/70/16's on my GV !
I got mine from Bob Jane t-Marts, product code for them is - MAO12257066, and they were only $185 per tyre...
I do like the D694's, they were going to be my 2nd option, if i couldnt get the Maxxis, but they dont come in a LT for the GV, as far as i can see...

I disagree about Maxxis AT's, mine have taken everything i have thrown at them, rocks, sand , and mud, and have performed very well, i have had them for nearly a year now, and they are only just showing any signs of wear, and for those on a limited budget, or want to save money, they are $140 cheaper then coopers...

A guy at work has had the same D694's on for 120K and thats without the deeper tread volume and the dompulsory rotations of the coopers.
