I will be filling in top left, and top right ends, but I am wondering if you guys think this will work? If needed I will put plate in between the rod and the axle housing.
Thoughts on the design? does it suck, or will it work?

Oh yeah, the bottom perches will come off, I am spring over, I left them on for support while I am welding. |

I have been thinking of doing something similar to my diffs. Whenever i have seen something like that, they are always plated. For my rear diff, i want to have trac bar mounts built into the truss. I wouldn't have the bar below the diff, it may get caught on stuff. oozuk used C channel to truss the under side of his diffs. It doesn't hang down much at all. What is the thickness of your tube? |

It is cold rolled solid stock 1" I used solid stock because I also used it for knuckle braces.

As in solid 1" rod? Holy crap that's serious! Couldn't you plate from the inside of the rods to the housing to make it super strong? |

the issue might be that with a hard whack you might just crack a weld and bend it anyway - unlikely but possible. i'd just put some small triangle gussets in place at the joins. |

Edited the above message to show the top brace too. So do you think a triangle gusset would work, or just a plate under the whole thing? Cracking the welds is on of my worries. I just picked up a front auto locker and chromo's. One of the main problems is ending the housing and stuffing the locker/hub/shafts all at once. I want to try to avoid that. Of course a little bit of air time is not unheard of either

How does this look, or would triangle gussets at the joins be better? I have looked at it so long I am about to say stuff it, and buy some of those low range trusses.

solid will be stronger than gusset every time... i onyl suggested triangle gussets cos i assumed you wanted it to look open. now you just have to weld it on without warping the housing =D dont forget to leave space for your spring plates too. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I know about suspensions engines etc.., but nothing about metal and structural stuff. I just want to do this once and have it hold up no matter how hard I am on it. I tired to get the known weak spots. I really like the open look, but I suppose strength has to trump looks , bummer hey 
If you notice the top of the housing, the left side hasn't been braced yet. There is absolutely no room for a brace there with the spring plate mounted up. I will have to figure out something tricky for that side. So you figure this will hold up to a decent beating when done? Quote: now you just have to weld it on without warping the housing =D
hahah I used the cold rolled to make sure the housing was straight when I started..Should saved it for the end when I have to check for true after the welding is done.. weld..stop...drink a beer... weld....for about three days, hiopeully that will keep it straight =) |

you dont really need to do both sides anyway. my rear is braced underneath cos theres no room on top, and the front is braced entirely on the top... so i've got more diff clearance at the front than i do the rear. this shows it quite well:

hey monkey does that ORA kit do between the mount and the knuckle as well? cos you need to make sure you do that too. |

suzistore made the hi-steer kit to suit my car... they made a 2nd one while making mine but its not cheap, especially for your inferior US dollar =P http://www.suzistore.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=1363 it was machined from a solid block of a specific steel my engineer required. then as you can see in the pic of my zuk a bolt drops through the standard steering arm with a spacer to pick that up as well as the caliper bolts. its also around 10mm longer so you get a bit more leverage making the steering lighter to turn =) |

i've never bent a rear diff housing, but its easily possible. you must be glad you had room above the housing, i had no choice and had to gusset the underside of mine, drags on the ground now and then, but its not too bad =) |

any sort of huge bounce landing 1 rear wheel on the ground before the rest... especially in an uphill climb when the vehicles weight is on the ass end. thats my thoughts anyway... has anyone bent a rear housing? |
