G'day

My fuel pump in my sierra decided to give up last week so I replaced it on Saturday. No dramas, took the old one off, followed the instructions and put the new one on. The engine was running for a couple of minutes then stopped. Tried turning it over again but it wouldn't start. I pulled inlet hose off and their was no fuel in it. Turned it over again and the fuel pump wasn't sucking.

Pulled the fuel pump off, pulled the fuel pump rod out and made sure it wasn't sticking anywhere and put a little oil on it. Turned the car over again and sure enough the pump rod wasn't moving forwards and backwards. I checked out the FSM and found it was run off the cam. I pulled the tappet cover and this is where I've stopped. I'm not to sure where to look next. So short of taking it to a mechanic does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Thanks
Sam

Is the cam worn to the point that the rod no longer pushes on the pump?

you wont be able to tell if the cam is worn unless you take it out.
could be either worn cam or the push pin could be worn
is the pump brand new or second hand new?

I thought the push pin looked alright, it was a snug fit and moved well. The fuel pump is brand new from suzistore and I compared it to the old one before I put it in.

Would their be any other indications elsewhere if the cam was worn?

I'd think if the cam was worn you'd still get some fuel to pump as the rod will still be moving in and out (you'd pretty much have to wear the cam lobe flat/break it to get no pump action  ). I guess to be sure u could have someone turn the crank over by hand while you hold the rod in with your finger - just to see how much stroke it has. I'd be looking at either the length of the fuel pump rod or making sure they sent you the correct pump lol?

Not that I'm doubting you but triple check u got inlet and outlet pipes right lol :D

I'm not being silly but you do have fuel in the tank?

If ur partial to a bit of fuel in the mouth you could try and suck some fuel from the hose that goes to the FP inlet! :D At least then you could possibly rule out any blockages between the FP and tank. How's ur fuel filter?

have you cranked it over with the tappet cover off ? maybe the timing belt has decided to break , or maybe the cam is broken (you would usually see extreme heat spots and aluminium though)

Well after a bit more stuffing around I pulled the pump off again and now the pump rod wont come out     ... I'm guessing its bent

Looks like I'm pulling the engine apart

Can you just crank the engine via the crankshaft and wait for the cam to push it out?

From my thinking it cannot bend?! It is in it's sleeve which is close tolerance.

It would break the fuel pump arm before bending I would think.

Wait for the cam to push it out some and grab it with some pointy nose pliers.

Also check the pump is good. Press the primer arm while covering the input/output nipples. It should hold vacuum.

the rod in mine got stuck once, I just used long nose multi grips to grab it and twist/wiggle it loose.

with fitting the pump, you need to be extra careful and keep it perfectly upright when tightening the bolts, if it tilts toward the rocker cover, the actuator rod can slip over the top of the fuel pump lever, it took me three goes before i got it right.
