Post subject:  Ignition lock removal
Hey guy's,

Just a quick question about replacing an ignition barrel, I've been watching a few youtube clips on how to do it and most of them say that you have to turn the key into the Accessry position. The only problem being is I am replacing the lock because the key is that worn and it won't turn onto the Acc position. As well as being able to remove the key when the engine is running, which we all know is a big no no.

The car is a Corolla, but I'm sure most locks use the same technique to replace them. I've sprayed a bit of WD40 down the barrel to hope that it may free up the locking pins, but nope.

Any tips?

just punch the snap off bolts that hold it on loose and drop the whole lock out

So you mean those little locking pins that suppose to be pushed down when in the Acc position. Just hit them with a punch?

The other option I was thinking was going to town on the lock barrel with a big arse drill bit. :lol:

The ignition switch/steering lock assembly is held in place by two bolts with "shear" or "snap-off" heads - when the bolts are tightened at the factory, the hex heads shear or snap off, making removal of the lock assembly difficult.

Those are what Royce is referring to.
