Post subject:  Sierra Steering Boxes - Faster Steering.
My steering box is getting pretty sloppy and is out of adjustment, so the time to replace or upgrade is coming soon...

There was discussion in fatzooks build thread a while back about making the standard sierra steering faster by using a different steering box to reduce the number of turns of the steering wheel lock to lock, hence giving a better turning circle (marginally) and quicker response off and on the road.

Has anyone actually done it?

What box did you use?

How'd you make it fit?

....How much did it cost?

Dont matter how big or small the wheel is it will still be the same amount of turns lock to lock :lol:

Um... Can someone please explain to me how changing the size of the steering wheel will change how many turns it is from lock to lock??

Lock to lock remains the same,
but a smaller steering wheel needs less motion at the rim,
for same amount of angle of steering.
But steering would be heavier.

this is more about changing the steering box - as this is likely the only legal way to do it (engineered)... most likely some sort of powersteer would be the best way as it would eliminate any extra work your arms would need to do in order to push the extra gearing in the box faster?

I did a Vitara power steer on my Sierra.
In using the Vits pitman arm,
I finished up with a steering ratio that meant too much movement
in the steering to achieve turning,
not real good for fast dirt sections.
A smaller wheel would have been better,
but changed cars instead :lol:

what about jimny power steer? being more of a road car surely they would have faster boxes? anyone tried?

The vit pitman arm is shorter than the Sierra,
hence need to turn further, for same input to steering wheel.
So a longer pitman arm could be one solution.
I agree with that logic, re using a Jimny PS,
but don't know if it is true.

Sierra one turns quick enough imo. I had vit ps and it was slower, didnt stop me chucking it around.. Drive to suit..

Go hydro

Quick steering will be hell on freeways..

quick steering on a freeway would be fine so long as the steering had no play in it... right now mines got almost 1/4 turn and the wheels only twitch! lol

wont a longer pitman arm mean the draglink hits the tie-road though? oh wait nevermind, my draglink is infront of the tierod...

is it that easy though? its too late for me to imagine.

LHD Hilux box

Fits in the right spot on a sierra.
Hilux is on the outside of the chassis so a LHD box fits on the inside of a sierra RHD. get the standard drop pitman arm so it doesnt have the tie rod end in it.

This is gwagon's idea, Ive been trying to get one here for him, but its cheaper from lowrange.

Jimmy has a shorter pitman arm which is why it is a good option for ruf as it allows more forward diff movement without tierod to draglink bind. With the hilux idea it needs to be IFS left hand drive but they are very bulky and require a bit of chassis modification. I think you will find that if you had a new standard steering box with no play you would be pretty happy.

perhaps =) its something i'd not really considered (keeping the standard box) - my idea is to always try to upgrade when something breaks.

can you run the jimny power box and sierra pitman arm (longer arm) ? if my pitman arm goes any shorter i'll get fouling on the steering - right now it only clears by 5mm. (draglink/tierod)

the jimny power steer setup on ours is rather quick
still 2 turns either way but its pretty responsive which i find great
