My cars keep falling into washouts, and I'm to old and infirm to get out and jack it up.
I'm gonna buy lockers.
Why do you all want air lockers, whats wrong with autos.

Because you get switches to play with and awsome swish sounds
Seriously, you get the choice of having it on or off, were you don't get that choice with autos

from what i understand...
theres 'nothing' wrong with auto lockers, and they are cheap when compared to air lockers, but are prone to detonation and if fitted to the front, can be a nuisance as they engage regardless when the front hubs are in and can make turning difficult.
manual operating airlockers are stronger and have the added advantage of you telling them when they are on or not, they are also stronger and less prone to breakage, but can suffer oil to enter the air lines and prevent activation when not properly installed, also the price is well over auto lockers... a lot.
if installed right, each locker will be fine, but it comes down to budget and how often you would need them etc.

Selectable. You can have them on or off whenever you want. Such as on road or in a tight turn and some off camber sections.
Autos can be annoying. They're also as illegal as a spool.
But it's much of a muchness depending on who you ask and what suits you.

if you don't have $$$ to spend and dont drive it much on the road, then weld the rear and you'll go most places no worries, theres often no need for a front locker going through washouts, its usually only on super technical or really big stuff that you /need/ a front locker - and in those situations theres usually a way around anyway =)

Doesn't apply in my area. There's heaps of tracks where the way around is still up a cliff haha.

Driving everything locked is less fun. When your unlocked its easier to find challenging tracks, and your unlocked with air lockers unless you flick the switches. I am so firmly of this belief I have thus far refused to lock my LJ, until I nutted out how to air lock it.

i think LSD is only illegal if its not a factory fitted number... ie: Ben_Sierras factory sierra LSD is legal, cos it was factory fitted to some sierras.

All lockers are good, I have selectable in rear of 1 car and twin autos in the other. In some ways the auto is an advantage over manual in the front in that any time you use a front selectable you can't steer (only a problem on technical bits where you may need it on some sections but not want it on others). The autos are tolerable but not really a "diff". Legality is really a grey area, not sure the rule refers to auto unlockers. If they were similar prices I'd have selectable every time but when you can get 2 autos from the US to your door for $500 they're a good choice for a car that isn't a daily. It's already been said, you get what you pay for.
Oh and if you do fit lockers you'll just get stuck somewhere where it's harder to get out of the car!

It has to be an advantage to have selectable on the road, they're a normal diff when turned off. Don't always turn off at the flick of a switch though and naturally only as good as the installation of the airlines and compressor.

the rules only say the diff cannot be locked... LSD isnt a locked diff so skirts the rules... also, if LSDs were illegal why do so many cars come with them from the manufacturer?

and its not as if the department are going to pull apart your diff on the side of the road and check, you would have to be driving erratic for them to notice.

going by that therory an auto locker is legal too as it locks and unlocks automaticly just like an LSD.
and by your therory and ARB would be illegal too
still sounds like your making it up.

I know you're hot for me, but you'll just have to deal with the rejection.
I just want to know the Official truth behind this statement:
"They're also as illegal as a spool."
True or False?

I have dual detroits in my TJ, engineered and RTA approved in the ACT. I did the lane change and braking tests with them (obviously in 2wd) and the engineer was fine with the handling etc.
So unless they have changed the rules since 2002.
I don't see what the problem is - they allow differential action when cornering so......
