hi folks,

just bought my first sierra after a string of other 4x4's and so far i'm very impressed with their offroad capabilities but less than impressed with its fear of hills. i'm finding myself slotting back to 3rd sitting on 60 to 50 kays going up hills. is this par for the course with these wheezy little motors or should i be getting more out of it?

the tyres are 235/75/15's which are bigger than stock which would no doubt affect the cars speed but geez, 50 kays uphill :blink: ? i thought my toyota 4runner with a 4Y-E was slow :lol:

reduction gears were suggested to me on another forum (which is a road that i see myself going down) but is there anything that can be done short of a turbo or engine swap that will squeeze a little more out of the little bugger?

the engine in this particular car has high kays (405,000) but has been rebuilt in the last 80,000 according to the bloke i bought it off. the head is a reco by the looks of it, the gasket looks brand spanking, extractors, zero (and i mean zero!!!) leaks as virtually all the seals have been replaced with receipts to prove it, new leads but the plugs are a little tired so they will be replaced on the weekend along with the dizzy cap and rotor button.

its already got extractors, but not sure about the rest of the exhaust i'll roll under her on the weekend and have a bo-peep. yea, i was thinking a carby tune would be on the cards.

A carby tune would probably help quite a bit, especially if it isn't zipppy in the lower gears around town.Do you guys have CV valves in your manifolds? If so replace it for sure, and check the vacuum advance for leakage.

I am thinking transfer gears are the go for you. A 4:1 would be good if you are sticking with the same tires. If you go bigger you can supplement with cheap diff gears from a vit.

A 5:1 if you are going bigger would be the best. A lot of guys like 6:5 because the warranty, and they are cheap, but IMHO it is way too much gear for anything smaller than a 33, and puts a lot of stress on the transfer and it's mounts.


If you are not going to be wheeling a whole lot, then jut some cheap diff gears to get you some power on the road will work, but in my experience they are not the best option, just the easiest and least expensive.

its just where the car feels happiest.

I've got 6.5's and 235/75/15's and it's zippy as (you have to give it heaps though) the only problem I have with regards to power is that there's something wrong with my carby and it wont stay over 4k rpm for very long without starving for fuel. I think the float level is out or the needle is sticking.

I guess I should brace my transfer though.

Oh and without the carby trouble it would pull up hills faster than 50k after the gears, before it was just like yours.

Have you checked the fuel pump? Is it possible it is getting weak, or are you pretty sure it the carby?

I bolted on a nikki twin barrel carby from a mitsibihshi van back in the day. it had mechanical advance for the secondary so you could rip out all of the vacuum shit. It was a heap more powerful than the stock carby, It would bolt straight onto a 1.3 intake manifold but you have to port/dremel the openings way out as the primary and secondaries are larger in diameter.

well worth investigating other carbies for some more power. used to rev its tits off...Ask built for thrashing about his corrolla carby conversion. thats another good one to look at.

Tried anto86's carby on it for an afternoon and we couldn't make it starve so we called it carby trouble.

I'm just going to replace the engine with an efi model, g13bb or g16b, finding one is my problem.

i'm happy with the tyre size, its a daily driver but also a weekend toy so i need to meet myself halfway. i just want more speed uphill... but other than that i'm very pleased with the car

No excuse :lol: . Mines daily on 31's. Will be on 33's soon and my neighbour has 35's.
