I've got a Magnum 9000lb winch that I would like to convert to remote control.
The control box is under the bonnet, and a bit of a pain in the arse to plug the control into.
Has anyone successfully converted their cable winch control to a remote control?
There's a couple of cheap ones on ebay: here and here
And a Warn control as well.

they are not really reliable in my experience. Unless you pull it apart and seal it up very well I wouldn't mount one under the bonnet.
Another way to go is to wire up a centre off three way switch for winch in and out with an isolator rocket switch in the cab and also a couple of waterproof buttons on the bar for winch in and out. Pretty easy to do and more useful than a remote control

The remote control setup works but not recommended with a FAST winch as they have a delay on start and stop.
I got 2 or 3 sitting on the shelf willing to sell for $60 each

You wouldn't mount the receiver under the bonnet? Or the winch control box itself?

Unless your g/f is driving and can't winch and drive at the same time, the remote comes in handy for nav to operate winch

There was a spate of Vandalism attacks on 4wds a couple of years back when young pricks would release the cable on the winch, trail it over the cab turret and attach the hook to the towbar. They'd then short the control lead plug with a paperclip and watch the cable spool in and crumple the roof down to floor level.
If you have ANY winch controls on the exterior of the vehicle, make sure they are electrically isolated until specifically switched on, by a relay or solenoid operated either by an interior switch or the ignition key. The relay must be a sufficient amperage for the winch motor.

When I installed my winch I put in a solid state relay box, mounted under the bonnet and have not had any probs. with it.
I have an isolating switch and in/out switch on the dash. I also have a wireless remote for out of cab work. (navigator etc). I agree that there is a slight time delay with the remote that you need to get used to.

I have just overcome the same issue. Instead of getting a cheapo winch i got a decent one, but doesn't have a radio receiver. I mounted the plug for the controller onto the bullbar and just extended the wiring back to the solenoid under the bonnet. The wired controller is so long it will reach through the open drivers window, so you can driver and operate at the same time, but I'm going to do what dank suggests and wire a second rocker switch onto the dash. After reading all this I thnk I better wire up an isolator switch so vandals can't tamper with it all.
Wiring up a radio receiver is hard. I tried asking the tigerz 11, i bought my winch from them and they said they use a different solenoid for the wireless models, so it's difficult to convert a non-wireless model to wireless.

Take the control box apart and you will see that the plug socket can probably be disconnected and wired up wherever you want to mount it. Then you can move it to a convenient place such as on the bullbar or somewhere external. just another option.
EDIT: Found this for 3-wire control of winches. looks good. Tigerz wireless controller
