Probably easier is a G16 vitara motor with 3 spd auto and 6.5s and 4.57s or 5.12s in the diffs. You're probably using hilux diffs or somethign so diff gearing is heaps of options there.

PS Gearbox choice is probably more important than engine choice. Go for an auto, crawling is just so much better.

I know of 2 of australia's top suzuki going this way [matt white for 1]plus the snake buggie and I think 1 of pirates suzuki based buggies has this motor

I run a 1.6 efi ,3 speed auto ,hilux transfer but i am upgrading to 3.8,t700,lt230

If your considering a big motor think hard about buying a complete rangie... cheap, lots of coil conversion bits. Good auto and transfer. Lots of pluses

if i were to build a crawler i would want it to be able to smoke 36"s on rock and a geared 1.3 (unless turbo and efi possibly) or 1.6 could not do.

Hi Currently i have a standard 1.3 in my sierra. As my project is only a trailer-ed crawler running 35's or 37's i am looking at power options if i need to. What would the best type of engine be for this project: standard 1.3 injected 1.3 1.6 4AGE Bigport Bigger diffs, auto trans, 6.5 gears I would like some advise which way to go.. Thanks

Personally, if you can get enough gearing into it i dont think you need a huge amount of power. some thing efi will be nice though

i reckon a 1.6 EFI would suit this perfectly... you get more torque and power, but not enough to start breaking things, and it will work on crazy angles better than a carby setup.

Depends on how you want to smoke. I can turn my 31's in 4th low in the shed on the brakes. They don't spin at a high speed, but the smoke. The last thing I would want in a crawler would be to smoke exspensive tyres

It's a big, heavy lump that makes bugger all power for its size. It's advantages are cheapness and parts availability. It's usually everything else that you look for when picking a competition motor. The 3.8 might make sense in something a bit bigger(eg hilux), but not a zook.

I'd rather a lighter engine making the same power, even if it costs a bit more. Obviously you'd rather the 3.8.

After seeing the 3.8 in action in a hilux with the T700, I rate them as a wheeling motor. They are sooo cheap, parts are cheap, gearboxes are cheap... I reckon it would make a good motor in a lwb zook if you could set the motor way back into the firewall area for weight distribution. We always joke about a 302injected windsor and 2 speed power glide in zooks. would be mad my 20v is awesome. with an auto is even more awesome. but it cost me about $4gs now to get it reliable with the auto strong enough to cope.

It is a good debate and yes different options available.... I personally think I will go with a 1.6 EFI, auto...

or you could just leave the 1.3 in and gear it right the only problem i can see with the 1.3 is stalling because of angles with carby also think about auto boxs they make life easyer and are nicer on drive line

The question was the best motor for a crawler. I say an EFI 1.3/1.6. Beyond that, crawling is all about gears and an auto. Greg's G13BB/Jimny auto is all that car has ever needed, running a 4:1 transfer and 5.12's. However, lower traction surfaces and long hills, more wheelbase and better axle control, plus a more absorbent suspension means that sometimes there's no such thing as too much power. That's not crawling though, and it's far from the forte of a sierra based car. Steve.

I can smoke 34's on rock with a 660 - 7500rpm 3rd low, dump the clutch. I sometimes want more power than the 660 can deliver, but it's not for anything called crawling. Steve.
