Post subject:  Choice of 2 stroke oils

Well, I am drawing close to the point where I run out of my stock of Genuine Suzuki 2 stroke oil, and need to consider what will be my choice of a long-term replacement. I want to stick with one grade/brand of oil so I don't have to keep adjusting the oil pump for different viscosities.

While I mainly use Suzuki CCI, I have in the past (due to long trips, etc) been in the position of buying a few varieties of oil and want to know of other LJ50 Owner's experiences and the types of oil they use.

Suzuki CCI oil is a 20SAE oil, and reasonably viscous. The closest I have found in a similar viscosoity is Shell Nautilus, but I think that fouls plugs worse than the CCI.

Castrol Active 2T is a lighter oil that burns with little fouling, but with so little residue that I think I should be adjusting the pump to feed in more oil to offset the viscosity.

Fuchs Sikolene seems OK, but gets pricy.

I have been forced to use a synthetic ester based oil from a bike shop (no alternatives available from the servo) that was nearly $40 a litre, but the exhaust smells so sweet that I just want to park in a garage and rev the engine 'til I pass out.

Is there any point in buying a top-dollar synthetic oil, or will any common 2 stroke oil be suitable?

I was just going to get big drums of it from boating stores.

I kinda figure an LJ50 engine is much closer to an outboard than a motorbike engine, it's got a nice flat power curve and tops out at the same low RPMs. It's also relatively cheap.

We use Husqvarna oil in the RV90 (which has CCI) and it smokes pretty bad but it must be doing something right because the bike has stayed alive even though it leans out and fires of it's compression quite often. Ben used to make it do that and then take it for high speed runs (it has probably 1.5 times more power like that) before I told him what that will do to it.

BTW, I don't believe you have a build thread for your LJ50, I would quite like to see one.

From memory that motul 800 one you have isn't designed to go through injection systems. It is for pre mix only.

Have a look for the Shell range of 2 smoke oils. Not the bottom of the range lawnmower ones but the next line up. I think it is Advance SX or something like that. Shell M would smell great but the castor based oils absorb moisture which I am pretty sure will give you problems down the track

What does suzuki say?

Also, I don't know enough about the engine to really comment on which oil to use.

Do you know what ratio it's supposedly mixing at?

I've been running Activ 2T in mine for 5 or 6 years now (or however long since I built the engine). Will still foul a plug if I turn the oil up for a road run (turned it up to .7mm clearance for a 220km each way run to Landcruiser pk once). Set at zero clearance they last okay though. I was lucky enough to buy a new oil pump from Suzuki when I was shopping for pistons and rings. A mechanic at work who used to be a 2stroke bike freak told me not to use outboard oil as boats have different piston clearances and the oil is designed not to pollute waterways more than make motors happy. I haven't had any problems, "touch wood". So 303 Zuke have you ever tried any alternative pistons? Last ones cost me $97 ea and rings were $65.

I don't know as I am new to the Suzuki 2 stroke motor but as a Rule of thumb it is bad practise to use oil intended for water cooled motors in air cooled ones and the other way round - water and air cooled motors have different clearance's all round.

if i can ever get my hands on a LJ it will be run on caster oil but only because it smells so nice.

for a great all round 2T oil castrol active
we have changed all our stihl saws and drills to it from gen stihl oil(which is castrol) at 50:1 it runs clean never fouls a plug or cloggs the spark arresters

I even run 50-100 ml of it in all the fuel tanks on my cheery pickers as I belive it helps stop valve recession in 4T to a degree, but the whole fuel system likes a little bit of lube better

I think once you get past the above in terms of quality you just throwing your money away unless your trying to look after a uber highly stressed race engine.

things like the shell mower oils etc although probably similar or better than the suzi oil in terms of spec are a very low spec oil and are only really designed to run a $200 victa. I wouldnt even run it in a good saw.

Ive seen the active on the other hand run in saw (by mistake) at about 125:1 for two days in summer before we asked the guy using it why the fuel had no marking dye in it :x so it works well

The stuff I use is in a gold coloured bottle I think it is called castrol TTS Racing 2T. Seems to have done the trick over the years I have owned 2stroke LJ's
