Hey guys,
Went out for a wheel with dad this long weekend to our 4wd clubs property and
When we got home this morning

Dads 03 gu patrol was billowing smoke from the vents.

Temp Gauge wasn't showing anything wrong
But popped the hood and we could hear the coolant bubbling.
Let it cool down and we put 5-6 liters of coolant and water in it.

Can't see any evident leaks

What's your thoughts on the sudden overheating?
FYI the engine has been rebuilt 10000km ago and the radiator was replaced 6 months ago

Guage needs water over sender to show any reading.
So water loss doesn't always give a warning.
I cooked my last motor, it never showed on guage
I have had leaks that are not evident,
radiator pressure test is only sure way to check.

Hopefully not a head gasket, crack or other nasty possibilities

Thankfully it's a TD42 with turbo and intercooler full ground up rebuild and has 10000km on it

Still doesnt change the fact that dad wants to drive it too work with almost all water in it.
Td42 patrols have 20 litre cooling capacity I've put 1.5 liters of coolant into it and 6 litres of water now.

Question remains where did that liquid dissapear too? There is no leak to speak of visibly.
Oil is not milky or any evidence of coolant in it.

Could be leaking into the combustion chamber. Does it blow smoke under heavy acceleration? What sort of warranty did he get?

ahhh lucky it's not a 3.0 bomb, thought it might have been when you said it had been rebuilt already.

i'd have a guess it's probably the water cooled turbo that's drinking the coolant.

The big problem is you've put coolant in, are you sure its the exact same coolant is was already in there? mixing coolants i really bad and when unsure its always better to just use water

if its not losing coolant fast and this is the first time its been low simply cause nobody has checked it regularly, then keeping an eye on in and driving it likely will be ok, I went years with an engine that used a little coolant but passed every test, including pressure tests and co tests and it had a massive crack in the head

Scrawn- it does blow smoke under acceleration that's sooty black, we've had it dynoed to check this and the result was the air-fuel ratio wasn't 100% what it should be.
What sort of warranty? Don't know silly old fart doesn't know squat about engines and wouldn't let me be filled in on all work that was done other than its got a 3 inch exhaust and aftermarket turbo.
His internal operating brain system runs something like -ain't broke don't fix it-
Which I think is all well and good but he's got to pay another 17k for a new engine if he fucks this one and That could be avoided with some investigation and preventative maintenance and he "doesn't worry about stuff till it happens"

Incident with water before work one morning caused the rebuild. (My bad)

Atari- your saying the turbo temperatures just evaporate the coolant?

Royce- well that's shit wish I'd known that earlier

Well I've managed to convince him to have a compression test done so he'll do that tomorrow after work.

I believe what Atari is saying is that the turbo itself could be leaking water either into engine or into exhaust, that is if it is a water cooled turbo.

Was it a Diesel specialist that did this analysis? Sooty black exhaust smoke indicates unburned fuel, but not necessarily a bad air/fuel ratio. A Petrol-minded technician will assume unburned fuel must mean excess fuel. The most common cause is poor fuel spray pattern from the injectors due to wear or even tip damage from contaminated fuel. When was the last time the injectors were reco'ed? Most need to be done about every 70 to 100, 000 Ks.

303zuke, I don't know about the state of the injectors, my old man won't tell me because he doesnt know he's too trusting thinks they just do things automatically, if it was my truck I'd be asking a bazillions questions about what's been done and replaced.
I assume since we had the engine rebuilt under partial insurance and the fact we were told everything under the bonnet had to be replaced so I'm not sure wether they are new injectors, reconditioned or second hand.

I presume if I wanted to find out all the work that was done I could just walk into the place and ask for the records?
It was done around June last year so they should have them correct?

Atari, pretty close you were,
Dad and I are both members of Southern tablelands 4wd club, I'm a 4wd instructor with the club as well so when we have training weekends we teach new members "basic 4wd" (pretty intense learning and tracks we have them drive)
and dads just a member.

Diagnosed and fixed.

Leaky and corroded heater core.
Passenger floorwell carpet was soaked with coolant.
Must have been stuffed for a while apparently.

1100$ later and it's fixed.
Cooling system flush
A/C degas and regas,
Replace heater core
Fixed
