Gidday;
Pulled the head off last week to replace blown head gasket, stupid me got the son to clean the LH side of the engine, and he turned the crank and cam, then cleaned beautifully. Now the problem, what do i use to time the crank to the cam, as there is no marking on the crank cog except for the key unit. The cam i can understand, but the damn crank has to have a position in relation to the crank.
Can any one help with a diagram or such
Cheers

Don't you set cylinder #1 to Top Dead Centre (which sets the crank position) and then the cam to the timing mark?
I could be wrong but that's the way I understood it to work.

That's what i thought mate, below is what i have carried out.
1 Turned crank till tdc
2 Turned cam till number 1 inlet rocker is closed and exhaust just about to open
3 Set number 4 to rocking with number 1 cylinder.
4 Put drive belt on, turned crank twice and all ended up ok
5 Checked compression as thought had bent valve, but all cylinders are 165 plus pounds
6 Set tensioner and put outer crank cog on
7 Car just turns over, fires and coughs and sounds like crap
What can i do
I could burn it and dance while it is burning

I think you nearly got it right.'
The rotor button needs to be pointing at the number 1 lead as well

have you pulled the dissy out of the head as well?
assuming ignition is ok
Point the keyway on the crank straight up, youll see a casting dag it lines up with
Point the keyway on the am DOWN, then a mark on the cam pulley will line up with a notch in the backing plate behind the pulley
the dissy will be pointing at number FOUR lead, not 1 like usual
second problem is there are 2 ways the cam pulley can be bolted to the cam, if you havent removed this you are right, if you have then having it the wrong way it will jsut not quite start, I can never remember which one it goes on but somebody will pipe up soon enough

Thanx mate;
Never touched the dizzie except unscrew the 2 small screws and checked where the rotor was pointing. I actually phoned Hayne's manuals and they said they didnt know lol yeah so why not i thought. I was looking like the mini's, ample timing marks everywhere, but nary 1 on the lower crank cog, there's a line on the outer cog, the one that holds the belt to operate the waterpump and alternator, but none on the inside, me thinks i might have the wrong stroke. I think should be on the compression stroke, but the key gets number 1 tdc with inlet closed and rotor points to number 1 cylinder, next step the fire lol and get me indian suit on.
Cheers
Peter
