When I looked into the laws in QLD, it was pretty simple to keep legal. Must not protrude more than 150mm out from the body, no sharp edges for pedestrians, the normal visibility rules and must use appropriate mounts. In theory mine was legal other than the mounts, and didn't require a mod plate. But in all honesty, getting a mod plate would stop the cops been dicks about it. NSW is probably smiler, but different.
