So I think my winters mud plugging efforts are starting to show up... I've got a seeping/leaking/dripping front crankshaft seal in my Vitara. Does anyone know how hard a job is it to replace? I've never really had to put a spanner on the motor since I got it. It looks like there is a heap of crap that needs to come off to get to it or am I better off just farming it out to my Suzuki guy? |

So it looks like you have to pull all the ancillary belts off, the rocker cover, the pullys and idlers, the crank case, the timing chain and guide ( maybe) then the seal cover and maybe the tooth drive gear on the crank aswell. |

looking at the FSM, it looks like it's just the timing chain cover crankshaft seal... might as well do the timing chain while its apart. |

WTF? does the seal not jsut push into teh housing behind the bottom pulley? |

you're correct royce, bloody ripper! looking at the FSM again, it does just push into the timing chain cover from the outside. (behind the pulley) |

i gave it a good clean up & it is coming from the behind the bottom pulley & it's getting spread by the engine fan all over the place once it reaches the edge of the block & sump... it's been seeping for a while but my skid plates stop the drops falling straight on the driveway for all to see.

atari i've done this on my GV....took about 3 hours and that included removing the radiator. No special tools or anything |

When you get the seal out, inspect the machined surface on the crank for any damage all the way around. Sometimes some shit gets stuck in the seal and chews the crank out over time. Not very nice... If it is munted, you may chose to do nothing about it and just chuck another seal in. But at least you'll know it's not likely to last long... |

I've been thinking that it might not be that flash in there after the winter it's had it might need a speedy sleeving or something, I think I'm just going to drop if off to Mr Suzuki & him to fix it while I thrash one of their loan cars to death. |

Yeah it's up to you, they do get old and rooted without stuffing the crank. In which case you'd save yourself a small fortune by doing it yourself. Personally I'd give it a crack. If the crank sealing surface is rooted, just whack a new seal in for now then when it flogs out give it to suzi then. |

booked it in for monday morning... CBF'd dealing with it if it does need a speedy sleeve so close to our trip away. going to get him to stick on a new serpentine belt while he's got it as the one that's on there is cracked like a mofo. |

3hrs labour + parts & it's all good, there was a fair bit of grit in there from this winters swimming lesson. probably could have done it at home but had a serious case of the CBF's |
