hey fellas just got a new sierra that will have a build up on soon. its gun metal grey in colour and i have an extensive list of mods for it but firstly i have to figure out what size tires i will running. the car will be used for a variety of different applications. it will do some very technical driving. along with with towing my trailer and kayaks around.

im just trying to figure out what will be the best tire size to cover all its applications.

any input is greatly appreciated.

31s will be perfect 33s will req more work chopping etc not to mention atract alot of attention from the cops .. eather way u need some trans gears what is ur plan for the car what are u wanting to do with it what kinda build up are u looking for budget how much are u wanting to spend

What's wrong with 235's or 30's? The capability of the car does not just increase linearly with tire size alone.

I understand that fully jrzook. the reasons as to why im going for a 31 minimum is where i am from diff clearance is a big hassel i wheel with people who are winch even competitors in patrols with 37 minimum and found that in my old sierra (even though on 31s) i was constantly winching and diffing out on there ruts so and more clearance i can get the better. also 31 is alot more common size and is cheaper.

guard chopping is not a hassel. it is a project car, but the mods i have nutted out so far in my head are:

triangulated 4 link in the rear
either 3 or 5 link in the front
g16b conversion
6.5:1 trail gear transfer ratios
chrome molly cvs and stubs
tigers 11 competition grade winch
custom bar work from head to toe
6 point CCDA approved cold drawn seamless steel roll cage mounted to chassis.


they are just the major works i have planned.

its a trail rig. i would go 35 or 34 but im not interested in doing an axel swap and with tyres that big in my terrain and sierra wheel base. i would roll quite easily... although it is only 1 inch bigger then 33.

Chromo's can handle upto a 35... If its a trail rig and you don't mind chopping it up, why not extend the chassis and run the biggest tyre u can. Look at ajsr's build, he's running 34's with chopped guards. It's inspirational stuff and is going to be a very capable weapon when finished...

i love mine on 31s... sure, now and then i wish i had 33s for just that bit more clearance, but then i just pick a better line and up i go.

IMO a sierra on 31's in the ultimate reliable allrounder so long as gearing has been addressed.

you wouldnt need to pick a better line just run twin lockers like me bahaha

i think yours would be good with 33s on Alien :)

If you are doing that much I suggest really wide 33s if you don't want too big. But if your going 4link 35s would probably be the go.

One inch shaved off the diffs is equivalent to 2 inches of tire size,
So 33s with shaved diff should effectively give you he same pumpkin clearance as a 35 :wink:

31's you can get away without destroying diff's too often.

If you've got built diff's then you have no reason not to run a 35" tire :lol:

thanks for your input guys very handy. 35s are not really even on my mind 33 with -25 offset is my preferd size. but i want something that reliable and not going to tip over.

my budget will probably be around 4-5 grand.

With all due respect unless you can do 100% all of it yourself and you already have a G16B & some steel lying around your way off the mark on your budget!

You will spend upward of 10k pretty quick! A set of 33's alone will be over 1K.
Gears are $500 plus bearings and output shaft.
Cromo's and winch will be well over 1k once you have set it all up.

Oh and things dont tip over unless you make it do so!

10 k ... u could build budget comp truck for that 5 k is plenty to run something like he wants to i spend about 3k on my zook it was twin locked cromos 6.5s all i needed was some bar work and some 33s and i could comp it .. 2 x lock rights = 500 + cromos 600 plus gears 700 + tyres 1500
+ tubing 1000 + winch 600

I have had a fair bit of success over the last few years running 32 inch Pedes that measure 33. The 2 biggest things that worked in my favour was the fact that I was still pretty narrow and the fact that my car was so reliable, it ment I spent more time on the tracks then in the pits. In 4 years, 5 comps and plenty of social wheeling I only ever broke the stock cv once ( Upgraded to Double Toughs straight away ) and put a hole in the fuel tank. Personally I would go narrow 33's or 34's.

Lockrights 500
Cromos 600?? (they are $250ish)
gears 550ish
33's 1500
Tubing 1000
Winch 600 (more like 800ish plus delivery)

When I went to school 500/250/550/1500/100/600 = 3500
AND this does not include bearings/seals/oils, welding gear, etc etc
Plus still not including the G16B and adaptor plate ($1000 -1500 +200)
Also bushes & joints etc for the suspension and coils, shocks, paint, etc etc.
So it will cost 5K easy in parts alone.

Id like to hear from Fatzook, Joe, Gwagen, etc and see if they would build it for 5k and they WOULD DO IT THEMSELVES as I asked.

already got the winch lockright and tubing. jd squared bender cigweld mig. 33s i can get for at 80percent for 50 dollars a tyre and a good friend of mine owns a 4wd shop so i get basically anything i want for cost.

ill get a baleno from the auctions shouldnt pay more then 800 bucks
and ill more then likly make and adaptor kit my self as i have knowledge with cad programs and my tafe teacher will let me it it out for free.

and my next door neighbour is a auto elec so 2 slabs and hell wire it up.

but the 1.6 is the last thing on my list. i wanna drive it first.

and at the moment im heading more towards 31s just untill i get my house and renos sorted ect.
