Hi Guys, as I'am preparing to fit my rebuilt engine, also thinking of changing to auto. Considering the auto out of the 1995-1997 1.6L EFI but also interested in the 2.0L auto gear box. Not sure which is better, but there is no problem with fitting either. I found a place that can sell me a plate that allows the 2.0L to bolt to my G16B engine. So, how reliable is the 2.0L auto box? How good is the gear ratio on the 2.0L auto as opposed to 1.6L 4SP auto with overdrive? Anyone with experience please comment. Thanks, Damien |

Er, AFAIK the 1.6 and 2.0 box are the same - they are an AW-4 auto, and no adapter plate is required to fit a 2.0 box to a 1.6. That's assuming you are talking about the 4 cylinder 2.0 (J20) if you are referring to the 2.0V6 (H20) then the gearbox is still the same, but the bellhousing is different. AW-4 auto bellhousings are removable, so swapping the bellhousing to one that suits a 1.6 is the best bet. Fatzook may have more detailed info as he has more experience with the J20. Steve. |

Not sure about the autos, but I know for a FACT that the manual 5sp 1.6 and 2.0 (4cyl) boxes are the same. The only difference is the bell housing. The J20 bellhousing is longer and a different bolt pattern to the 1.6 bellhousing. So I think its fair to assume that the autos are the same.....AW-4's. In light of this, just use the 1.6 AW-4 auto, as it will bolt to your G16B motor. On a side note, the J20 flex plate and converter may be slightly larger than the G16B ones. this is just a guess based on the extra length of the bellhousing. |

There you go - I thought the J and G series motors had the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I was sure TT ran trimatics behind J20's? does that mean they have a J20/G16 adapter as well as a J20/G13 adapter? Steve. |

You would still need a complete vitara j20 for manifolds, sump, ancillaries etc, and even then I'm not sure they are completely interchangable. I have pics of one somewhere..... |

Thanks for the help guys, sticking with manual for now, fitting an auto was too complicated for my skills sets so I shy away from it. Maybe next time...., loving the new HD clutch, never had a HD clutch for any of my cars before. Touchy & Grippy!!!! |
