Post subject:  Battery Boiling? Maybe.

Hi Guys,

Just went and checked on my zook, it's been in the garage since I went to the mountains the other weekend.

The battery was all wet all over and there was a small puddle in battery tray. Now I went through some small puddles the other weekend but the entire engine bay was dry except for the battery. my only thinking is that it's either faulty and for some reason boiling itself because it hates me or there's some other reason it's wet.

I checked the charge and it's still fully charged it works fine. The only possibility I thought that could be messing with it is I have another battery under the bonnet on the other side which is hooked up but only on the negative, the positive is capped and rubbered but not hooked up, is there some way that this could interfeir with the main battery? if so I can't understand it.

Any suggestions on what it might be and if it's a problem would be appreciated. It's a cheap Super Choice (or something) battery but it's brand new so I don't think it'd be that.

Could it be my Alternator? do ther continuously charge no matter what? is that a bad thing? sorry but electrics other than the basics are my weak point.

No...

Your alternator if it was boiling while running. Presumably you have yourself a multimeter or some other way to check the charge? While the engine is running with a few revs (i.e. not at idle) check that it's not charging outside of spec. For the vit that's 14.5V, and others will be similar.

Is it overfilled by chance?

Over filled or a leaky battery. Would be my guess.

Is it a sealed battery or open. If open, open it up and fill with disttilled water till about 1cm from the top. If it reoccurs. Then its a leaky battery and replace as their are some bad shit in wet cell batteries. Concentrated sulfuric acid comes to mind and lead/lead sulfate.

OK I'll check the Alt. It shouldn't be over filled since I only recently bought it new and can't get the fill/check cover off to check the levels. If you get the liquid on your hands would it burn straight away? becasue I had it all over my hand for about 20 mins till I noticed and thought it might be the battery?

Well if it didn't burn in 20 minutes(yes you would notice it) then i assume none of the said dangerous contents have escaped. Might just be a leak of distilled water.

Yeah I'd be checking if there was anything else that could be leaking around the area... Another check is to grab a little bit of bicarb soda and chuck on the wet stuff. If it's acid it'll fiz up as it's neutralised. If it's just water it'll sit there fat dumb and happy...

You know what?! I only thought it was battery acid/water because it was only on my battery, but it could possibly be washer fluid  I did use them once and the acid/water was a little slippery feeling, I'll check that as well hopefully this is the answer. I'll check it tomorrow night and let you guy know. Thanks for the help and sorry to waste your time if it ends up being washer fluid.

So yeah, looks like I'm an idiot  was washer fluid not battery acid.
