Post subject:  32inch mongrels

I have bought some 32inch mongrels and I have fitted them to the rear with some extended shackles.
I was going to fit some extended shackles to the front do you think that will be all I need at the front to fit them?

I also have a transfer with rock climbing gears will I need to fit that as well?
I know I will need to cut front bar etc but do I need to fit longer shocks.
I was thinking of using comodore and hiace as I am on a budget.
Thanks Tim

How big are the shackles? any other lift i.e body or suspension?

I would recommend usign a suspension lift before shackles and body lift.

I have no body lift or suspension lift!
The shackles are 4.5inch long?
I was going to make the front ones the same?
is that too long?

Forget the shackles and do a 2" suspension lift and cut the guards

Will probably need to move the diff foward which is really easy
All you need to do is redrill the perch on the diff and the u bolt plate.
You will be able to take the whole diff out from the car if you undo the leaves from the cahssis and take the disk callipers off and steering link then jsut wheel the whle lot out to re drill it

X2. Extended shackles aren't the way to go in this instance. Go for the longer shocks and extended bumpstops too

are they actually mongrels?? they went broke twice before disappearing off the map - the last time they folded was in 2008 - so if you bought mongrels theyre at least 3 years old! haha and the carcass its remoulded onto could be older than SSSIERA!

as for your dilemma - a 2" spring lift isnt going to clear the tyres, they will still rub on compression of the spring.

you'll need to either do a body lift, guard chop or both. You'll also need offset rims so the tyres dont hit the front leaves on steering lock.

none of this is really achievable on a shoestring budget if you're going to do it properly.

If you bought the tires before the lift, and now you are wanting to fit them, I would do a bit of research right here first. There are alot of threads in the "Rigs of Auzookers" that are running 32's and have done their suspension the right way.

Maybe some nice guys can point you to their build where they it 32's and share how they accomplished it, and the things they would change of they could.I am from the states and we have different materials available here so I am of no help on that front.

FWIW
Just installing longer shackles is not going to do it without making it very hard , or impossible to drive. Since shackles only lift one side of the spring, you only get 1/2 the length you add. So say you make shackles that are 2 inches longer than stock, you are only going to gain 1" of lift.

As for the gears, if you are on stock gears you are going to need that transfer with rock climbing gears just to get your rig out of the shed. Do you have any idea what the rock climbing transfer's gear ratio is? (4:1, 5:9, 6:5 ?)

I hope some of that helps.

A suspension lift wont help, unless you extend the bump stops too.

A body lift will help, but you may need to clearance some seams inside the gaurds with a hammer, as well as possibly trim some of it away.

I vote for a large gaurd chop or often known as a virtual lift ;)
