Post subject:  LJ50 gearbox questions.
Does anyone know if a LJ50 gearbox with a 5 bolt bellhousing will bolt to a 4 bolt motor? As the bolts or rather studs are in the motor my thoughts are that the 5th bolt or lack of will be ok, but is the pattern the same?

Also are the clutch and flywheel the same? Trying to avoid surprises when i swap the motor over.

In the back of the LJ50 manual I had a look at where it showed the updates and so on I'm pretty sure the patterns were very different. Maybe someone else has that in their manual and could put a pic up?

Thanks Tony. I dug out my manual and was just reading the same. On the next pge it shows the differences in the bellhousing bolt patterns. I was hoping to just swap in another motor while I recondition the other one. I have a 4 bolt gearbox, flywheel and clutch. The manual also says that the gearshift shaft, motor and gearbox brackets are different. Might have to turn the garage, upside down to find these. :)

Hi Fity, I've got my spare motor bolted in at the moment which has the different bolt pattern to the original gearbox.

They still marry up, the bottom stud on the engine just protrudes passed the bell housing without interfering.

Clutch still lined up no problem, been up and down the driveway a few times, all seems to be ok.

Ben, I have to agree with LittleJeep and think that only 3 bolts would not be enough and will end in failure. Even with the 5 bolt motor flywheel on a 4 bolt motor is the input shaft in the right spot?

Maybe fitting the crank from a 4 bolt to a 5 housing will work. I had a quick look in the manual but didn't notice any difference. Except that the 4 bolt which i have is a 2 ring pistons model. Anyone know if there is a benfit to only having 2 pistons rings?

Yep, flywheel and clutch all lined up no worries.

Not really worried about failure as it's only a temporary motor to move the car round home whilst i get the original rebuilt. As soon as that's done it will go back in and the second motor will be used as spares.

But physically it is possible to fit it.

Have you found someone to do the work on the crank? I will have mine out in the next week or 2 so maybe we can get a better deal for 2 cranks.

No, i still need to get the last bearing.

The one we spoke about at Suzuki may fit but i never followed it up, Did you have any luck with the ones from OS?

I have new pistons now so i need to drop a cylinder off and get the 1st OS re-bore done, then I'll get then crank done.

Need to save some coin first!

Maybe 3 - I have one out ready to be done - Depending on cost.
