There's some blokes at college here from UAE. A few of them have bought pootrols to drive around in while studying here.
Say what you will about their taste in 4wd's, but have a look at how they've set them up...

Unfortunately there's lots of bling. Chrome bumpers, not-even-close-to-legal tinted windows, and an out-there paint job complete with ricer stickers :lol:

What is interesting, is the choice in tyres.
I remember going to Moreton Island as a kid and seeing VW Beetles and trikes getting around on what looked like aeroplane tyres. Nice and fat, with minimal tread, you could see how they would float nicely over the sand.

They are called Siam Desert Tyre.

I've no idea if they are even available here. These blokes probably had them sent over from Dubai or somewhere. I'll ask them next time I see them.

i currently have 31" desert duelers on my swb and they kill every other tyre i have had on the sand, that being said im sure that is sierra specific as the at's on my 100 series sucked ass but the maxxis bighorns were a million times better.

i can vouch for my baja claws being awesome on the sand... even with shitty gearing... they really make all the difference 10psi and voila!

Those tyres would be utter shit to drive on the road with.

900-16 rags.

The ultimate sand tyre was fitted standard to the LM002 lambo 4X4

325/65VR17 pirelli. Had kevlar sidewalls to make them bullet proof and had a little lip on the sidewall designed to help the tyre float on sand.

From my experience muddies work just fine on the sand as long as you drop pressures right down. A/Ts and road tyres you seem to be able to get away with higher pressures a lot more as they aren't hell bent on digging to china.

Had a mate with brand new big horns and at 16psi he couldnt even get close to getting up a hill that every other fourby on the day walked up with ease. Was the same pressure he used to run in the A/Ts he had previously and certainly had never experienced anything like that before. Dropped them to 10psi and it walked over anything & everything the rest of the day.

Against sierras with any tread, and I have been against many, they in 4wd, me in 2wd, no comparison, be it outright acceleration, climbing, whatever, the bigger the tread, the more the traction.

IF I had a vehicle worthy, power wise, as Atari says, sand paddles. If bald is good, why on earth are sand paddles so perfect.

In my toy, at 5psi, I get quite a bit of bag, in a heavy pos like a Patrol, id say they would be on the rims, if not, get a propper gauge.

makes sense, as the tread on an AT is closer together the surface are of the tread is greater than that of a muddie

Take them down to 5psi, I go sideways in 3rd high, full noise, been up on 2 wheels many a time, nary a thought of tearing the tyre off the rim, long as you are able to spin, your larfin.

I don't doubt that at all, and in Tassie? Cold, wet, icy roads. They would be horrendous :crazy:
But take them up to Bridport or St. Albans on the sand, they would be awesome.

Paddles? Yeah, maybe they're better specifically on sand, but as soon as you hit the bitumen, you're going to tear them to pieces...

I had a spare set of 9.00-13 Dunlop Grasslands that I used on my Land Rover for trips to Stockton. Same tyre size that Len Beadell used on his Series 1 Landie to plot the Woomera Rocket Range in the 50's. Excellent sand tyre, but not much good on anything else.

Later changed them for 9.00-13 MRF Sandgrips. Awesome on everything!!

It's a bugger that I could fit 13 inch rims to a Land Rover (drums all round), but they won't clear the front calipers on a Suzuki!! The MRF's would be ideal on the LJ.

303zuke, how does one get wheels smaller than 15" for a zook? Is there an after market company that makes them, did they feature on another model of car or is custom rims the only option?

I've always wanted to try farm implement tyres on an LJ on sand.

Like the tyres on this Crofton Bug.

You would have to get the rims custom made, but they wouldn't be too hard or expensive. I had some made up using 13x7 rims with CJ Jeep centres to fit to a Suzuki when I got rid of the Land Rover. The problem is clearing the brakes. A 13" rim won't clear disc brakes with calipers, they will only clear LJ or SJ40 drums. But 9.00-13 tyres are about 31.5 inches in dia and the weight and leverage truly roots the spline on the LJ front hub. I guess 1lt front drums would be a stronger design with better wheel bearing support, but I still wouldn't like to run 31.5's with unassisted drum brakes.
