Post subject:  help with BenT vitara disc brake kit
As title says, I need some help from anyone who has fitted one of these to the rear of a vit.

The Kit comes with a cable clevis that needs to be fitted over the end of the OEM hand brake cable end, but I am wondering if there are different model cables, as this thing just aint playing the game!

Square cable end, round hole :crazy:

It doesn't. I've tried everything. Only options now looks to be to cut down the cable end, or open the clevis up. The clevis looks to be designed for a cylindrical cable end rather than the rectangular end that lives on these cables.

I'm also a little concerned that the cable end is only 1mm wider than the slot that it rests against, which would make it pretty easy to pull through after a few hundred cycles. :?

Yeah I took the pic with it the wrong way around. The instructions say to feed the cable end in through the hole, then slide down to the end. But the cable end is too long, and binds on the opposite side of the clevis, preventing it from going in far enough.

this is chop's intstall, but doesn't show that part of the handbrake cable. he had issues with the other part of the cable.

I would of thought you pull spring back, put the square thing thru the round hole than slide down to end.

I had a little trouble with mine too. I found that it was the most time consuming part and a pain trying to hold the spring back while feeding it through.

It does fit in there, just that the excess cable past the stopper was the issue with mine, I trimmed it off with side cutters and no worries.

Also, according to the picture, You have it around the wrong way. The cable sits in the cut out, the hole holds the stopper/lug.
edit. I just read you are aware of this.

Oh and, you will need to adjust the handbrake from the lever a fair bit. (You will have to remove the plastics covering it)

Go to a control cable place and buy a cylinder bit for the cable and braze it on.

looks to me it like anything like that, pull the spring back, hold it away with pliers (or small vice grips for the slow) and just poke the shit in there and release the spring

No doubt youll decide you need to redesign the cable to work with it that will somehow result in needing a new gearbox crossmember and 6 months worth of work though :)

How is Cammo going?

Did this. Cut the excess off and used the grinder to put a 1mm champfer on one edge of the block. Job done.

Ben seemed very happy to help with the silly questions I was asking him, he was great help.

And what royce said is what I done. Oh and slightly trim the excess cable and give it a little twist so it sits in there nicely.

I also found it easier to do when it was in my hand. Once the cable was in place I put in the whatsicalled pin and split pin.

Are you upset about my diet joke earlier? :lol:

I'm going with ' it didn't fit because of a manufacturing difference in the cable end'. Cable end has been massaged and the job is done.

Also worth noting this is not going onto my car. :roll:

I posted it here because I was hoping for an immediate response. Ben may have been having a night off 8)

No problems at all with the kit. It is very comprehensive, everything is well made etc. Would be nice to have a photo of the parts with their name next to them though. Lots of hardware in the kit, so there is a bit of time lost just trying to figure out which part is which. Still need to fit pads and bleed system. I'll report back later. :wink:

I 2nd that.

It would've been nice to know earlier what the fuck a quadrant bracket was :lol:

Also, I didn't know what the half moon gold coloured thing was, turned out to be the thing that plugs up the gap on the brake caliper bracket. I figured what they were after I was all done, A fair bead of gasket goo sealed up the gap for now. :lol:

I should've done a write up to help others.. :roll:

Well its all done. Pulls up very nicely now. The kit is nigh on perfect. Well done Ben Armsup

2 things though.

The instructions would be heaps easier with a few pics at crutial stages.

And Galant calipers suck. You have to wind the piston in to move it back.....so normal piston compressors don't work. :roll:

Yeah I prefer the normal piston compressor type. The wind in ones are a PITA if they are a bit tight. There is probably a special tool that makes them really easy to wind in, but that doesn't come in the kit :wink:

Next time you go to supercrap, Have a look in the special tool section. There should be a cube looking thing with all different style of piston spanner knobs around the cube.

The subaru ones your able to get a good set of pliers and use the tips in the divots and twist the pliers. Unsure what the galants look like though.

which ones all the ones off my lseries wagon (the one with handbrake on them) and the ones from the wreckers were push in with a caliper compressor. i know some off an early ltd are wind in.

A lot of wind in calipers will compress normally if you remove the handbrake lever thingy off the back first

Cheers for the feedback Fatzook. Sorry I couldn't answer your question earlier - been away for a few days.

Point taken on the instructions. I'll update the instructions to include a few pics along the way.

Most handbrake calipers I've seen use the same screw in piston design. The screw is what compensates for the pad wear and means you don't have to adjust them all the time.

I usually screw the piston in using a pair of longnose pliers. If you open the pliers up you can put one jaw in each pocket in the piston and use them to screw it in. Maybe I netter put that in the instructions too :)
