Post subject:  Race seats in a SJ80 coily

i have just acquired a set of autotechnica race seats and i want to put them into my 97 sj80 sierra. they were previously in an older model sierra, i think an 81 hardtop by memory. the rails are different from then to now and the rails are 1 piece on the coily seats. just wondering what other ppl have done to get these to fit. any help would be most appreciated. cheers mick

Mick,

The couple of coilys I have done, i've thrown the coily seat and rails, and used the rails from the donor seats with adapters between the rails and the floor.

Hey Mick

if you do a quick search you'll find there's a few threads regarding this problem.

The other approach is adapting the standard rails to the seats. generally have to trim the tops of the rails and mount 90degree angle line to it although you have to compensate the height difference as the rails are different heights.

bad pic of the ones i did, if i'd know it was such a problem i would have taken more pics

hold on to your old ones for a while and dont butcher up the old rails. you may, as i have, find race seats a pain in the ass to get in and out of.

I think the key here is not to use $300 seats from repco/ supercheap. You get what you pay for, so at $300 you ain't getting much padding or comfort. One of my sets of Recaros are hard to get in and out of, but once you are in........No complaints

cheers for the replies......yea im a bigger person so im hoping the seats are a bit more comfier than the standard seats.....the race seats were out of another cheap suzi so i thought better to re-use than waste more money.....

I used the original rails, trimmed the backrest bracket off the top of the rails on both sides the bolted 90mm angle to each of the rails. then i bolted GTI swift seats to the angle.

But before you start drilling new holes and bolting the seats in make sure you work out if you have enough room with the rails completly back.
