So I got defected yesterday afternoon while near Toolangi national park for my tyres sticking out from the guards and my mud flaps being to short.

My question is, I still have my standard rims and tyres, if I fit those will the car pass? Obviously I have to fit bigger mud flaps, but not fitting flares would make my life easier since there must be atleast 70-100mm of tyre sticking out from the guards.

Vicroads can't pick up other issues while checking for the ones the cars been pulled up for yeah?

I don't know how to post a photo from build thread to here but theres a photo with my lift on the car and standard tyres.

Car has 2" body 3" suspension lift.

You have answered your own question here. Been standard there going to pass... And been a smaller rim your mud flaps are more than likely going tobe closer to the road and cover more of the tire. You need to measure them..

If its an inspection centre you have to take it to, they can go over the whole car not just the items the defect was handed out. Thats what normally happens here in s.a.

Yeah mate thats a pain, but with so many guys running the gauntlet every day with defective vehicles sooner or later it is bound to happen. It sounds like you are worried that they will find other things wrong, if that's the case then I would sort it all out before you go to save further grief.

Hopefully they will only pick up the defected items in VIC mate as others have said above, but I know in WA you'd have no hope at all unfortunately. The stock wheels/tyres just makes the lift look that much more massive.

is it a cop shop defect or is it marked to go to an inspection station?

if it's just a cop shop defect they'll probably only look at the listed items unless you get "grumpy cop" who's going to ream you which ever way he can.

My Sierra was pinged for wheel coverage and a sharp edge on bullbar.
It depends on the bit of paper you are served with.
Mine was only for mentioned items and Vic Roads bloke laughed,
ticked passed, and then said go home and put the big wheels back on.
The sharp edge bit wasn't even looked at.
But it can depend on person's demeanour, on the day.

Make sure it looks clean and tidy, should be ok.
I can lend you a set of stock wheels with 28's on, if needed

If you want to use the big wheels would it not make sense to just extend both flares and mus flaps or it is only going to happen again ...... again .....again.

And 75 to 100mm of tyre sticking out is very dangerous you must admit.

engineer it if possible, put it back to stock to get it cleared then rebuilt it & put flares & flood maps on or prepare the lube for many return visits.

Plus it protects the car when I fall into big bog holes.

I can't find any decent looking flares that will actually cover my tyres.

Why not just go with Clark rubber flares? They come in 50mm & 75mm widths, aren't massively expensive, and as they are flexible rubber they don't get damaged offroad. Take you time when fitting them and they look neat as can be.

Sounds like the 75mm stuff would do the job perfect.

Clarke Rubber make a cheap 75mm flare sold per meter. Failing that maybe get some garden edging or similar and make some yourself. Uncovered tyres are a danger to others.

In Vic there is a checkbox on the slip that says only defected items or rwc on the entire car. which one is done on yours?

If its only the defect one, thats all they look at like chris said.

In QLD it's the whole tyre. If you look vertically from above the flare you shouldn't see the tyre.

Covering the tyre wont help you if the wheels are too wide or have too much offset and it has changed the track by more than what is allowed. In Qld that is only 50mm overall so 25mm or 1inch each way.

Just go back to stock. If you go in with stock wheels they will ping you for the 5" lift.
Don't pee them off, otherwise you may find yourself clearing a defect or two every year.

I know tires sticking out looks cool, and tough as, but catching a rock to the face changes that opinion really quick. I have caught my share of mud and rocks to the face while spotting a tire. I will have flares as soon as I can figure a way to fit them.

One good sized rock changed my opinion in a hurry, after I got feeling back in my right face, it was throbbing for days.

QLD is different to Victoria.

matt I would just stick the stock wheels and tyres on, or even leave it on the big tyres to make it look all proportional and then run down to bunnings and grab some 150mm garden edging. It;'ll give you enough to screw/rivet into your guard and it holds it shape nicely and will flex if rubbing on banks, just go a little overboard. Also can use it to extend your mudflaps.

They will only check the mud flaps and flares, they won't worry about the tyres as long as they have roadworthy tread. Just go in with a good attitude, make a bit of a story up about the whole thing, ask the inspector how his day is going, get his mind off the job a bit and I reckon you will be fine.

it depends on what is on your defect notice as to how bad it is.

if they put on the notice that you needed to fix the wheel coverage and mud flap issues and just get it checked off you will be ok. this is rare

if the notice says you need a rwc and check at vic roads then it will ALL have to be road worthy and may go over the pits at vic roads if your unlucky , this is the more likely of the two
