Hey Guys/Girls,

I'm keen to find out what rev range you guys go through on your Sammys.
Mine is a 1988 model Samurai (SJ50) with a G13a 1324cc with timing set at 11 degrees running 95 - 98 octane. I've owned it for over a year now and dont seem to have too many issues with it (weekend warrior for hunting) but I've always thought that it revs a bit low. I feel i'm going to blow the bugga up if I take it much more than 4200 - 4500rpm in any gear. Being a small engine I would have thought it would rev freely to easily 5 - 6k like a toyota.

Keen to hear how everyone else's goes.

Cheers,
Grant

Stock engines are rated for maximum hp @ ~6500rpm. Shouldn't have much of an issue revving up to that

Mine used to rev to about 8000 but the motor was very loose. The new one i put in, would easily rev to 6000 and could be pushed to 7000 but it didnt sound as happy.

thanks for the quick replys. I must have an issue somewhere, just not sure where. Seems to go alright, just not rev happy.

mine used to go to 6000-7000 pretty easy but is getting pretty tired so i am trying to keep it around 4000-5000 till it gets a rebuild.

Dunno what carb is on yours but a common issue here is the vacuum secondary throat not opening.

Standard one. Thanks for the suggestion, i'll have a read through the FSM in regards to the vacuum secondaries.

Thanks

Mine wasn't sounding to happy above 5500. Just before rebuild managed a over 7000 line locker. Lasted a minute and ended with cracked piston skirt. Still drove it smokey for a few days...

Having a look through the FSM, is the above your talking about the secondary throttle valve? can't find any reference to a secondary throat.

Wasn't to bad. Looked like a magna or excel under load. Still heaps of power too.

That would be correct. Look for the vacuum actuator and check for leaks. Then check the vacuum line to it for leaks and see if it's clear of carbon right through the carby port.

yeh my g16a revved easy to 6000+ and was happy as... then i got the g16b and babied it for ages not going over kinda 4500-5000... but of late i've been giving it a hiding and it loves it. Theyre supposed to have a rev limiter but i've not found it yet.

Need to try harder, mine loves been on the limiter. Even the g13 I had loved to rev past 6k.

Nothing quite like using valve bounce as the limiter :D

A g16b at 6800rpm is better haha

Really pointless in a stock G16b. Makes good power till about 6000rpm then tapers off pretty quickly

hahahah the toyota carola hire car we had n sydeney last we loved is rev limiter. 6500. wasnt till we dropped it of that we were told it only had 500 kms on the clock when we picked it up! OOPPS!

Mine pulls all the way to limit, that's
With extractors! Your motors probably
A little loose

With 200odd psi of compression and extractors I don't think so, neither do the peps that have taken it for a spin.

Maybe my butt dyno is a lot less loose and more configured than yours

What's the timing set to BTDC' ?

11 degrees. Now i'm literally going away for the weekend after this post and wont be able to check replys till sunday night but i have a question and it may be stupid

If the bonnets up and i play with the accelerator control and open her up, should i see the secondary acctuator move? my thoughts are yes, but it doesn't. So the issue would lie there?

Cheers all and have a good weekend

Yes it should move open, on rapid
Acceleration, high rpm

His drova absolutely smashes shit and sounds good bouncing the limiter :D

Around 10 with the diag connector bridged. It's on the safe side, anymore and she will start to ping. They are not as rev happy as the 1300's. The power peaks at 6000RPM compared to 6500RPM of the 1.3's. This is pretty noticeable.

grunta:

It's a vacuum actuated secondary setup, hence it will only come on at high loads and throttle inputs. You would be lucky to see it move just free-revving. To see it it moves attach a loose cable tie or something onto the shaft and go for a hard drive. You will know its its working cause teh cable tie etc would have moved.

Only other way is to check to actuator/vacuum hoses/carb port for leaks or clogging.
