What is involved in removing the front diff centre of a 96 Vitara and keeping it drivable?

Can it be done easily without removing wheels and CV's or do they all have to come out as well?

yes, you will need to remove the RHS CV completely, cover the inside of the hub with a spray can cap. cable tie the front driveshaft up out of the way so it doesn't leak oil out of the front of the transfer case, cable tie the LHS CV to the LHS diff bracket.
