| Post subject: | cartopping a dinghy on the jimny |
Hi Guys, Thinking about finding a dinghy / tender that'll fit on the roofracks of the jimny. nearly all of my 4wding involves beaches or lakes, and i've got a spare 3.5hp motor at home. Does anybody use / has used a cartopper? Any tips on weight of boat, length, etc? and I assume itll change the handling significantly at faster speed. I realise the car length is limited. I'd prefer to do without the obvious answer, a trailer, can't take it on the beach, seperate rego etc. But if its a stupid idea to have a dinghy on top, let me know Cheers! Drew |

With 3.5hp I wouldn't even bother with a dinghy or tinny buy a decked out kayak |

With the small size of a jimny you'll be severely restricted in boat sizes. Even with my LWB, with stretched wheel base and long tray, 10foot length is really the practical limit. Thats a very small tender and not really suited to anything other than the calmest of flatwater conditions. I went with the kayak option instead. |

Quintrex jon punt, smallest is 3m long, 1.2wide, 40kg also google the Bluefin Tinnoo.. 3metre would be good with that motor. PS: http://www.bluefinboats.com.au/tinoo.htm |

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what is the actual distance between the stock roof rails on a Jimny? My wife has my Jimny with her at work, and I want buy a roof basket off Gumtree. Is 1330 x 1080 too big? I want the biggest possible without sticking out. |

That porta-bote and the tinoo look bloody fantastic. Both pricey though, I'll keep an eye on ebay. I've got myself a kayak, but with a length of 4m + is even worse on the jimny roof. Not looking for ocean conditions (I wouldnt go near anything with a 3.5 except flatwater), flatwater with 2 people. All good ideas above. bedbod, ill assume you already measured up? if not I can do at home. Thanks for the ideas guys |
