Just wanted to double check. as i've been hunting around for a while now, but there are really no options for higher diff ratio's for my LWB Vit. (running 5.125's now ) Are there? Wouldn't mind having 5th gear back... |

there are a few options. undertaker or the 5.3 & 5.8 gear sets that shandy92 was looking at in the states. |

Calmini gears Don't change high range Sierra transfer Is offset, so its just asking for driveline vibrations Dual transfers Is not practical in a SWB, as it leaves a rather short rear shaft, and the front becomes massive. $$$ also. Undertaker and 4.6 diff ratios FTW |

Auto! Converter is like gearing to get you going. im looking at 33's on no gearing with the auto |

The Converter will give ROUGHLY 2:1 reduction, but loading up the converter and slipping the auto will dramaticly reduce its lifespan, and generate ALOT of extra heat, so you had best fit a LARGE oil cooler for the tranny, and slap a thermo fan on it aswell. An auto is NOT a good substitution for gearing. |

Its still locks out in top and cruises so its not laboring. the converter when its not locked out is like its got a bigger engine with torque. thats how they work as for heat it never gets hot on the lines even on the beach. the same box is in a jeep with a 4 litre engine so a little vitara on 31's or 33's isnt going to worry it. |

as for heat it never gets hot on the lines even on the beach. the same box is in a jeep with a 4 litre engine so a little vitara on 31's or 33's isnt going to worry it. Its not about power of the engine its about torque multiplication. Yes the lock-up solenoid will still activate in 4th, but best of luck keeping it there. Your auto will forever be on kickdown cycle for even the slightest incline. And like I said....it wears shit out. Just out of curiousity, what does your transmission oil temp guage read when you are belting around on the dunes? |

I thought my Auto Vit LWB needed some high range gearing, but now realise my engine was not even close to full power. Hopefully a new fresh engine will have me lusting after some 33 x 10's |

Never gone over 75 but the only readings have been at the lines going into the raidator. Dont know about what vitaras youve had but mine has no problem sitting in top at 80 to 110. Anything under 80 snd it drops down a gear becuse its under 2000 in top. |

Not mine. I have 3 mates with vits. all 1.6's, all have 5.125's and 31's. 1 is a manual, and struggles on hills. The other 2 are auto's and will cruise on flat highway at 110 easy. Chuck a long gentle hill at them and both go backwards fast. All EFI BTW. |

Added weight of a LWB don't help much, either |

buy a SV, take all the good bits of the SE... smash some 5.12's in it & sell the 1.6 as a stocker. |

stocker next time your up this way your welcome to come drive my car and see what you think of the auto. i had no problems driving my car with those wheels but my last vitara (on 235's and manual) i would of never thought about putting the 31's on. i think the manuals gearing spread is wrong to work with bigger tyres. |

rockmonster transfer gears are cheaper than the calmini ones, well worth the cash. I like my shitty gearing in highrange. It stops speeding tickets and drops my revs at 100km per hour. i also put them in myself plus it heaps cheaper compared to either twin transfers or undertaker, either one your up to alot of money in custom length drive shafts and move around gearbox mounts. |

Brett i might hit you up with that offer, however i don't travel up that way too often ( well for fun anyway ) ... I don't really want to convert it to an auto even if it improves the situation. Its really a personal preference in that i won't drive an auto... Rock Crawler gears for the Transfer whilst they are great, they won't get me what i want for My car. The undertaker is an option but on top of that have to look at shortening Tail shafts, balance etc. more than likely double cardinal Joints for back uni for the extra angle that it will be on due to Lift and what not. Twin Transfers - IMO Rubbish for what i want. The 5.72 Diff Gears would be Good, Especially since i eventually want to run 33's. that would give me almost stock Gearing on those tyres... Would just have to look at Strengthening Axles and CV's which is a viable option... Just not really willing to be a test mule... especially at 350 Quid... All these options have got me thinking, and i will let you all know what i do, when i do it in my build thread... as for now, keep saving |

Not many are as brave to do what you have done to the Vit. I applaud you.

many thanks mate. It is very scarey pulling things apart, hoping I will remember how it goes back together. Taking photos as I go is very helpful. And researching is very benificial, too. A bit of good luck helps too |
