What you need is a slide hammer.

Unbolt the backing plate?
Mine slide out with a good pull on it.

X 2

4lb hammer / mini sledgie FTW

I beat the tyre instead to prevent damage to the rim.

Get a 6ft length of chain and bolt it to the hub studs. Then using a sledge hammer or a crow bar swing it into the looped end of the chain. Same effect as a slide hammer.

put a wedge inbetween the backing plate and the axel

Have you taken out the other side and unbolted the third member?

On my 1l the housing was jammed against the axel so badly, I put the hand winch on it, really tight and hit housing where the axel would have been against it with the back of an axe and it came out. If that had failed I would have cut the tube off near the bearing end, I was changing the housing anyway..

i undid the wheel nuts and left them on just a couple of threads and used the tyre as a slide hammer. worked perfect after a couple of hits :D
