When you're rebuilding or doing maintenence on free wheeling hubs how much grease do you put in there?

I have pulled apart quite a few that are just chokas with grease! But I just put a light smear on the mating surfaces and call it good. I've heard people say packing them with grease keeps the water out. But isn't that what seals & gaskets are for?

I'm interested in hearing what other ppl do.

Ive always put a bit in say tablespoons worth and then sprayed it all in inox, just to slippery it all up , but my mechanic mate tells me its too much.
Ive never had issues however

They don't tend to work so well when you pack them full. I'm with the 'light smear' crew armsup

Haha good topic. I learnt the too much grease problem the hard way.

I will admit I do like grease, shitloads of it. So when I changed my wheel bearings I whacked a good dollop in the hub locking assy. Bolted her up and it would engage no worries but disengaging was not gonna happen. When pulling the faceplate off the slide mech had hydro locked itself in the grease! Needless to say I pulled it all out and went with a smear . Also when I assemble the inner and outer casings of the hub I put a light smear of RTV on gaskets to keep that nasty water out of my new bearings/hub.

Just enough to make it noticable. you don't want excess as it will just turn to glue if any water etc gets in.

Once they've been serviced, I'll pull the outer dial off every few months and give it a spray with wd40.

i also grease the dial rather than WD40 it... grease is stickier.
