How old is the cable? It may be the original from 1992.. They can wear out internally.

If it is so, Take it off and chuck some wd40 down inside it for a temp fix. Otherwise buy a new one.

Lube up the linkage on the carb with wd40 also. Even feel/turn it by hand to see if its stiff when car is not running. (dont do this too many times, she may flood)

The spring on the pedal is soft anyway.

Replace the accelerator cable. They aren't that expensive and if a worn cable gets stuck (ie, flat to the floor) at high speeds the results could be devastating.

Mine went like that. The cable had worn and frayed, it eventually snapped (luckily while i was still in my driveway)

it was less than $50.00 for the part and overnight freight, and took10 minutes to fit.
