Hey guys, just looking for a bit of advice. I have a 91 Vitara and the auto transmission is slipping. It's only when the engine is cold, though it takes a good 10 mins of driving before its warm enough for the slipping to stop, and its only when its trying to switch into 3rd. So basically I'm left driving with it in 2 and not going faster than say 50 which as u can imagine is not exactly ideal. I've checked the trans fluid level and its right on the money, does it sound like the tranny needs a rebuild? Any idea how much that could cost? And do I have any other (cheaper) options? Cheers, Andrew. |

Did you check the level with the motor running? What colour is the fluid? You have two options with auto, change the fluid and filter..... or rebuild. Cheaper option would be to find a second handy. |

Here's the cheaper DIY solution. If it comes good when hot I would be tipping the oil is shagged or the lines or valves are gummed to shit. Run some auto trans flush in it and drop the oil and replace with new oil. See how that goes before taking it to a transmission specialist. You will walk out of these with a Tranny worth more than your Vit! |

If there's even a chance that could help I'd definately want to try it first before getting ripped off at a specialist |

Can we confirm its a 3 speed? like scrawn said, are you checking the oil with the engine running? is the oil red or brown? does it smell burnt? if its a 3 speed then simply dumping the oil for fresh stuff isnt the full job, a proper service should also adjsut the bands (which is likely whats slipping) which you wont do without special tools Ask a transmission shop, they may not be all that dear cause its a common box |
