Just destroyed the 1.3 in my 85 zook. Was A framing behind my motorhome and failed to find neutral in the transfer case. Apparently the 1.3 doesn't like doing 100kph in second gear.
I am looking at buying a GTI Swift to fit the twin cam efi engine.
Has anybody any experience with this conversion and how practical is it.
Are there better options/motors.
Hoping to hear some constructive advise.

speak to jonno_racing.

this is his write up on a Mk1 GTI install, there are a few different things that need doing depending on what series of motor used.

Terrific conversion, well and truely recommend it. Better power, better economy, better to drive.
Buy a whole GTI Car, they are pretty cheap and you get just about everything you need.
:D :D :D

Bit of a hijack but how much would a car be worth with a reasonable donk in it

I love my GTi , it's awesome.... and different to the normal g16 conversion .

never fails to put a great big smile on my face.
, would recommend transfer gears for good offroad usability .

Thanks everybody for your input. I have been away with no access to internet, but am now home with 89 GTI in tow and today started the conversion. Took out the cross ventilated 1.3 today, holes as big as your fist on both sides of the block and all the bearing caps are a funny blue colour :( .
I will be following Jonno's instructions with much interest and thanks for putting them up.

With 6.5 transfer gears it's an awesome conversion. Without gearing it will still struggle at 100 in 5th with big tyres. Very fun little revvy motor that cops abuse and comes back for more.

Consider a rear disconnect.
