well im not quite sure whats happened as it everything in the cooling system is not that old. if i drive for a fair distance then get to a set of lights the temp gauge slowly rises. i was out on a drive for 100km at between 90-110kph with the a/c on (except for hills) and it was all good till i stopped at the lights, it takes a few minutes before it heats up to. if i rev it to about 2000rpm it helps it keep cool.

items replaced, currently done 210xxx:
radiator was professional flushed at 160xxx, about 2 yrs ago
water pump was at 160xxx
thermostat -180xxx
radiator cap -190ish

the only thing is the viscous fan, but when its at running temp and i turn the engine off the fan stops straight away. so i ruled that out.

could i be up for a new Radiator? or what else could be going on?

thanks

i'd service the viscous fan first & see if that does the trick as it sounds like it's not getting enough air movement at idle & then look at replacing the rad, im thinking of doing mine soon for peace of mind.

Try hooking up a thermo as well?

Post subject:  Re: overheating g16b

mitch mine does the EXACT same thing... thermo fan on a manual switch fixes it for me... works offroad too... i've found at anything above 30 degrees it'll jump up on the temp if im doing below 2000rpm for any period of time.

dont forget though, when i bought my IR gun i confirmed that half way on my temp guage was infact 90 degrees C... so what i see as overheating is really just "OK" temperature.

When aircon is on,
the radiator fan for the air con is switched on and keeps temp down.

I still think viscous fan, but yes check everythiing else.
Air flow could be another issue. Mud in fins or similar.
Vit motors suffer bad if they overheat.

Mine was working what appeared to be right,
but under driving stress it wasn't.
I tested by fitting a solid fan, and all probs went away.

A guy on ebay sells brand new fans, if it turns out to be that.

is the AC condensor fan working?

Author:  shandy92 [ Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:34 am ]
Post subject:  Re: overheating g16b

yes the thermo on the AC works but i dont think it is big enough to be use full in cooling the engine much, but yes i might hook up a remote switch.

what is the minimim size thermo recomended? not sure what size mine is.

new rad from NatRad is $300??? worth it?

cheers

I think the thermostat should open at 86deg, so 90 would be operating temp...

Shandy I got my brother a radiator from ebay and it works great...cheap too ! will try and find a link for you.

what thermo fans can you put in ?

When I first started mine it ran at 2000rpm and hunted between 1500 as well. Mate told me it had something to do with the fuel intake, so he blocked off the ports on the air intake side and 'wallah' it reved normally..the part I need is now not available ( told by suzuki parts manager) something to do with 'a pellet'...could this be the cause of yours as well ?

cheers, chris.

Stick with the clutch fan, thermo's are a bother to put it nicely...

i think i would rather pay the $300 than buy ebay but thats just me.

not sure, any fan will work as long as its the right size and Voltage!

mate i think you got the wrong idea, i was reving it to the higher amount to keep it running cooler. i have no issues with it idling or reving. but thanks

ok well ill see what i can find out the thermo fan re-fill, so even tho the fan resists spin it could be stuffed?

Post subject:  Re: overheating g16b

Yep, and when you rev it its just enough to make it spin.

Post subject:  Re: overheating g16b

mine used to do the same (G13BA) so slightly different issue... dont know exactly what did it, but i pulled the radiator out, gave it a good flush out internally as well as between the fins, gave the motor a good flush, and replaced the coolant and issue went away... when was the last time you had the coolant flushed and replaced?

probably not the issue, but certainly no harm in doing it anyway.

Post subject:  Re: overheating g16b

well i might try the fan re fill then. The coolant is only about 10000ks out, and is still really green so i doubt that is causing it. Block as radiator were flushed at the same time.

I very nearly bought a new radiator,
before I learnt about the fans issue.
Glad I tried the fan first.
Rads were cheap n nasty, or eating baked beans for a month to pay for.
Talked to previous owner on a trip,
he had only put in a reco radiator shortly before I bought it.
My fan did appear to work, with the engine stop test,
but obviously not well enough.

Its a $20 job so it was worth trying it for me

yeah thanks for that, im hoping it isnt the rad as i did have it re-cored a year or so ago, so not really that long.

I've only ever used Toyota oil to service the viscous fan.

Toyota part # 08816-10001

I chased an overheating problem for months once, turned out it was the tiny little Earth wire from the back of the block to the firewall!

Check that is attached next time the hood is up.
