Has any Sierra owner actually gone to the effort to fold down their windscreen? I'm not sure i've ever seen a single pic of a windscreen laying down.

How do you actually get it to fold down? I'm in the process of re-painting, might be handy to fold it over to get into all the nooks and crannies.

mines been folded down to replace the window wiper linkages/motor... lol but thats all.

you just undo the screws on the window frame up top (that the door seals on) and then do the levers each side of the dash and down it goes.

while folding it over forwards, Catch the plastic panel that pops out of the top of the glovebox side.

Also, Not many people have the rubber/clips to hold the screen to the bonnet.

Pointless in my eyes. Literally.

I have removed the bar that joins the windscreen to the b pillar.

To fold the windscreen down is just unlatching the clips either side of the dash.

It makes taking photos from inside the car and an option, without shooting through glass.

I bought a set of brackets that replace the hinges and have mounts for spots. I put my cb aerials on them. Sky Manufacturing in the States makes them along with other good products.

dont get rid of them... if your wiper linkages go and you cant fold the window down you'll need to take the whole dash out to get to it!

There are no kits that I know of but US sold Samurai's didn't have hinges at the base just a bracket each side to locate screen.

I decided one day, that it would be cool to go for a 4wd drive with the windscreen folded down......

I was having a great time , untill I caught a friendly passing branch in the face......

screen up, screen down, screen off... a screen for every occasion.

I put mine down when it gets caught on trees / rocks / ledges.

It's much quicker if you dont have the A-to-B pillar connecters in place.

screen down is fun - but at over 40km/h the wind becomes deafening and you start thinking about wearing some dirtbike goggles for protection from flying insects.

Folded down looks cool, not real functional lol. Would be great for shooting with a lean bar that basically folds up as the screen goes down.

A couple of other points about a folded screen:

I've driven, and ridden passenger in cars with folded screens plenty.

A) They suck for visibility. They sit quite a lot higher than the bonnet so spotting the LH corner and the front extent of the car gets harder. Also, you end up with the rear view mirror and sun visors sitting 1/2 the way down the bonnet in your sight line too.

B) They don't really help with damage because the screen now sits right out at the edge of the bonnet. If it's banks/rocks you are worried about catching with the frame you might well catch them anyway with the screen folded. I drove gregc's car up Justice a while ago and he folded the screen to prevent smashing it, and as we were climbing the screen kept getting caught on the bank and getting flipped up and down.

The RHS of the screen is starting to get pushed up by the bank. This isn't the tight section of this track - further down the hill on this section:



The screen was flapping backwards and forwards alarmingly.

I know this isn't relevant to everyone, but it's a factor - the screen isn't really less vulnerable when folded.

However, screen off is awesome off road.

And despite how tight you strap it down, any corrugations or washouts in to road will cause the bonnet to bounce a little and you end up with dimples (or worse, a connected crease from side to side) on the bonnet where the rubber feet sit.

One bonus though, the windscreen makes a fab Map Table with a topo map held down with tons of Blu-tack!

LJ windscreens are a bit smaller, so they don't cover the full length of the bonnet and you can still see the front corners.

And whatever you do....don't weld it in place incase you need to take it off and replace it later on down the track if you do kiss the side of the hill

the way I see it- if it has hinges- who says you cant you use them?

a bit of common sense can help though- decent sunnies/ safety type glasses or old school goggles, and a cowboy style neckerchief to stop or filter out the bugs, dust and stones are a good idea.

bugs in eyes and teeth at 60klicks aint fun, learnt that lesson pretty quick!

why dont ya do it properly and remove the windscreen surround have the windscreen removed
so yo can paint it properly. while you are at it remove the front clip and give the
rust traps a good coat of paint. if ya dont strip the car when painting it ya may as well not bother.

I fold mine down all the time, one of the main reasons i went looking for a Sierra in the 1st place. I do a lot of solo spotlighting/shooting and having clear access out the front is a real bonus. Expecially as where i live/shoot is pretty hilly rugged country and the option of swinging the vehicle around to get a shot from the window is not always viable.

Haha I've always thought it stood out like a sore thumb. My black zuk still has a pretty metallic blue chassis. It shits me. I do think it weird they colour matched a chassis that is only really visible with a body lift.

I used to like folding mine down and would usually remove the doors at the same time. You'll need some good wrap around sunnies though and don't plan on going down the highway. I motored down the Gateway Motorway at 90 once and had to exit after a few k for risk of having my eyeballs ripped out of the sockets by the wind flowing over the bonnet. 60k is OK though.

No. SJ80 (coil sprung) sierras do not have a folding screen, which makes repairing even light rollover damage a massive pain.
