Hi Guys

My zook is growth spurting from lift, bigger tyres, roof trays, etc, etc...

I'm just wanting a quick reply on what your local supermarket / carpark max height is. I use my zook as a daily and deciding whether or not to leave my roof cage on permanently (putting it at a scrape under 2m).

Also, if its a 2m height, would you trust going in very close to that limit?

My locals in Sydney:

Bondi Junction Westfield 2.0m
Harbourside: 2.0m

Under 2m should get you into most carparks. I run my jimny with the roofbox and 40mm lift on all year round. It's 2.2m. About 50% of under cover carparks are 2.1m and the other 50% are 2.2m or higher.. So far i've noticed that every modern car park in my area (Newcastle) built in the 2000's is at least 2.2m. The older ones are lower. But there is almost always an alternative car park or a non-covered part in the low ones, I think they provide it on purpose to cater for taller vehicles, so i haven't been caught out yet at large shopping centres. Small old supermarket car parks like at your local Franklins etc are a different story though.

Sometimes I have to bang my way through the hanging 2.1m sign to access the taller car park, but my box is plastic so i don't care.

Lowest I've seen is 2.2m so I'd say that should be fine

With the roof basket on I can't get into the main carpark for the shopping centre here. It was rather embarrassing getting 3 other cars to reverse so I can get out. They wern't too pleased either.

Even with the basket off it just clears.

With 2" lift and 31's no basket I'm at 180 something cm tall.

they 'usually' allow about 100mm above the bar for safety so if you just clip it ull be ok just keep ur eye on the sprinklers etc.
although saying that i did get stuck in a carpark once the exit was on a ramp so i got jammed on the roof with my spotties and had to go on a bit of an angle to get out haha

I've been to plenty of 1.8m carparks around Sydney. The problem with not being able to park in carparks is there isn't much of an alternative that is closeby - street parking can be hard to find and also less secure.

1.8m car park, struth, that means many of us normal sized people could not come close to standing up in it ??? for real ??

i have worked in most buildings in perth cbd and there are some crazy small height limits under them 1.8-9 is pretty standard
which sucks cause im 1.95

I'll agree with that. I know for a fact that my set up is under 2.2m, but I still touch the hanging 2.2m sign at my local, so they are exaggerating a bit, the sign says 2.2m but it's hanging lower.

The 1,8m thing is typically liability related. There may be a couple of areas where the height dips under 2.0 (or whatever) around ducts, beams etc so the whole carpark gets a 1.8m limit so they don't have people going in there and smashing the place/ their car up because they couldn't see the low hanging bits.

I'd be surprised if the whole of the carpark had a 1.8 minimum - that wold just be really bad design.

Can't say I've seen anything under 1.95 myself.

Australian Standards originally applied 1.8 metres. So yes, you will definitely find some aging buildings with this height clearance (e.g. Focus Apartments in Surfers Paradise).

Australian Standards (as of 2004) set the minimum vertical clearance to be 2.2 metres from all overhead obstructions, including sprinklers etc. However, from when the plans/drawings are first approved to the actual construction, you will definitely find areas where the height clearance is less than the standard (for example where air-conditioning units have been provided). The Myer Centre in Brisbane is a perfect example (check the damage next time you venture in)

Agreed. For that matter I've never seen a carpark under 2.2m. I'm 1.96m tall, so I would have to duck to walk through an underground carpark that was 1.8m. Even 2.0m would be a challenge. Can't say I've had to do this yet......

They probably go off the lowest point in the carpark. doesnt mean the whole carpark is 2.2 etc, just the lowest point.

Haha, thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to check my height for a while. Is 1.95m I always fit but some have been close.

When Mrs Zukenutter was driving my old Jim as a daily she wedged it under a car park ramp Ripped the basket off and drove the roof rails down into the sheet metal. Was nasty.

theres a carpark near me that 1.8m, my zuk just scrapes under the pole at the entry =) its an odd feeling driving fast under there - you kinda duck and flinch at every low hanging thing on the ceiling =) haha never hit anything though.

Observation city in Scarborough had 1.9m safety boards hanging on chains at the carpark entry points- which most 4wd vehicles found too low- so they would either just barge through or have a passenger hold the board up for them.

then they would complain about wiping out thier spotties or roofrack on the gas main in the lower carpark.....



I tried to get the boss to get rid of the light timber boards and replace them with a hefty piece of heavy steel tube hanging on trailer springs or similar but the manager didnt want to know about it.
dont know if they ever solved the problem.

haha yeah that carpark is nuts... especially as you drive back up the spiral after going down, when the ramp ends the suspension unloads and the rear wheel get air... lol that was when mine was more stock, and it just missed the roof... prolly cant even drive in there now.
