Hi Guys,

I have a noisey 5 speed in my 88 zook that i think needs a rebuild. It has this light scraping sound like it has knackered bearings in it that is present in all gears and even neutral. It goes away when the clutch is in and can be minimised when in first, third and fifth by pushing and holding the shifter forward moderately hard. Does this sound like a tired box, or something external to the box? Sounds like it comes from the box, but i know noise can travel in these things!

If it needs a rebuild, can anyone recommend a rebuilder in Perth? I looked at doing it myself, but i dont have the space or time to do a rebuild at the moment.

Also, if i am taking the box out, i might aswell upgrade the clutch. Any recommendations on an aftermarket clutch kit?

Because it goes away when u put ur clutch in i would suggest it may be your spigot bearing.

Go and buy a clutch kit and this bearing will come with it.

As you are willing to replace your clutch anyway do this first and see if it removes the noise.

Also just get a normal clutch i have a hd one and they arent really worth it unless u have a bigger motor or really love to ride it .
Exedy seem to be a fairly reputable brand thats what i will be getting next in my sierra. Just go to your local bursons or repco ( if they have them over there not sure haha) and tell them and they should be able to sort you out

Wont be the spigot bearing as that only turnes when the clutch is depressed.

Not hearing the noise makes life dificult, if you want to make sure it is not the throw out bearing give your clutch some extra free play to ensure the throw out bearing is not draging on your clutch plate.

Most cases on zuks the bearings fail with in the box. There is rebuilding a box and just putting bearings in them. Almost every zuk box I rebuild these days needs hard parts due to the case hardening being warn on the gears, mainly due to there age and often due to lack of oil changes.

Depending of what you want (cheap or propper) depends on who you should contact to do your gearbox. Suzistore wont do cheap, where as a lot of just workshops round town will just put bearings in and leave the case hardening if it's slightly worn.

Yeah, the noise is hard to describe, but it is a scraping sort of noise that i have heard knackered ball bearings make before. I might try and take it for a quick drive on the weekend and make a recording of the noise.

If i need to get it rebuilt, obviously a mixture of cheap and proper would be nice I would like to do what is necessary so that i wouldnt need to worry about it again, without sending me broke!

I actually have another 2x 5 speed boxes in my shed that i got off a guy. I have no idea what condition they are in but i know they both have new oil in them. I could either stick one of them in and see how it goes, or get one good one rebuiilt out of those 2.

You mention you have done rebuilds Taylor74 - is that just personally, or professionally? I would be keen to do one and assist with it to learn about them if thats your thing. Gearboxes are the only part of a car that is witchdoctory to me
