Post subject:  Engine Numbers - G16B . 8 or 16 Valve?

Hi all,

I've been looking to buy my first suzuki and have been checking this site for a few months to gather some info. What a great site for advice and help.
I have done numerous searches after thinking I had read something about this but can't find the thread. Hence I need some advice.
Does the engine or vin number give any clues as to the number of valves the engine has?
Secondly, I am looking at a 96 SWB vitara with fuel injection. Does this mean its a 16valve or 8. And in your opinions does it matter'
Is there an advantage of the 16 over the 8 in the long run.
Also, what is the general opinion on this model.

Thanks in anticipation, Kev.

16v.

All G16Bs will be 16v, UNLESS they have been tampered with.

G16A carby models are all 8v's. You can also get G16A TBI 8v's, and G16A import 16v's too.

But a 96 model will be a 16v for sure.

Clear as mud?

96 is not only 16 valve, it uses the later coil in dissy 'x90' engine and has the same dash as the 2 litre Vitaras

Just to make things even more confusing, my X90 1.6 16v engine has a g16a block. I don't think there is a 16v/g16b 8v/g16a correlation, it appears to be inconsistant in my experience.

Was your x-90 a local or import motor? If its an import ( like mine was ) it will always be a G16a.

Not 100% sure of that. I was told it was local, but take that with a pinch of salt as the guy couldn't tell his arsehole from a hole in the ground.

My import Baleno engine recently fitted to my Vitara is G16A 16v EFI.
Supplier/importer had G16B's but they were all TBI (I think 8v)

Thanks for the responses all. It looks like as a stock vitara then it will be the 16valve model.
Is there a real advantage of the 16v over the 8v model.

Thanks kev.

Massive difference. 16V is the only way to go.
