I noticed on my last Glasshouse run a few weeks ago that there was a clicking sound from the front of my 02 GV. after doing a search it sounds like my CV's. I had a look at them today and the dust boots are in 2 pieces on both sides and looks like a fair amount of grease and crap in there after a bit of wheeling. I have an AWN warranty which is great(they've replaced the ECU after jump starting and a starter motor, no questions asked at no cost to me). So I can get the CV's fixed for free under the warranty but they're not stuffed, just clicking. The warranty also stats that CV boots are not covered which would be the cause of the CV's. So I need them to be stuffed. |

If the CV clicks it's stuffed & on it's way to being rooted, you'll just have to try & sell it to the warranty mob. the damaged boots will most likely be the cause, the CV is ment to have grease in it... not a combo of grease/dirt/mud/water.

For me it was pretty easy - lock hubs, engage 4WD, point uphill, spin back wheel. If front wheel no spin, CV shagged. |

Ok thanks, but i would like to find out before i go offroad, is there any way to tell without putting it in 4WD ? |

When cv is broken, you can rattle the axle around very easily with your hand. There is never any doubt when they busted. Clicking, or close to busting can only really be tested driving. |

jack up the front end, lock the hubs and rotate the wheels by hand, if it feels like you mixing a can of rocks with a fork it's stuffed. |

I have had this on my Subaru, I blew a boot, Grease went everywhere, AWN dont warranty cv boots!, But they also dont warrant a part that have been run it to ground because of something else happened. Eg: gearbox oil leaked out, then driven for 100ks. car wont go anymore. Its a crock of shit. I ended up filling the cv with grease, and putting a new boot on. Still ok. If it was clicking, then i would go to AWN and say its rooted. I have a engine light and my cruise flashing at me now in my outback, have to find the warranty sheet, and ring them. HOPEFULLY they cover this! |

if it's clicking it's well on it's way to being rooted, being a GV & most likely still ruuning the original set up, the CV's are constantly spinning slowly wearing a groove in the straight ahead position & when you put it in 4wd & turn the wheel the CV will click as it rides over the worn groove.... you know the click clack click clack noise you often hear when a Magna/Carmy pulls into a carpark, that is the sound of a stuffed CV. a rooted CV will make a hell of a racket & there will be no drive to that wheel. |

you do realise the GV's don't run free wheeling hubs? so when they would be stationary when in 2wd in a Vitara, in a GV they are constantly spinning when in 2wd, creating more wear on the joints & boots.

I put manual hubs on aver a year ago in the hope of getting better fuel economy. I only engage them when off road. No noticable change in fuel usage though. |

You can only tell when it's obviously stuffed. Sometimes they're stuffed/cracked and still work. You can put the car up on one wheel and jiggle your balls around and do a rain dance and think that the CVs are still good, but they can still be cracked. So you can never really tell unless you pull them out and look. (the CVs that is) |

and in which case you might as well fit a new one. If it's clicky it's stuffed. In FWD vehicles you always replace them if they click. |

Yes clicking, ok... so it only clicks in 4WD ? I have Hubs fitted... both me and monkey heard a sharp bang last trip, from the front passenger wheel, we both thought it was a CV, but i kept driving it in 4WD and heard nothing, and it kept driving in 4x4 ok... could it still be a CV, just not clicking ? Or could it be something else ? Any idea's ? I am trying to get some simple, but important, info out there, not only for myself, but for others who are reading this, who dont know much ! So I now have new CV's with no out of pocket expence. Question though, I now have shinny new bits that go into the wheels and boots but the shafts and bits that go into the diff are the same. what have they changed/replaced. |

Had a look today and yes they only replaced the outer cv and boots (I got the old cv's). He said AWN would only replace the outer cv, atlest if the inner cv goes I know they'll replace it and I still have at least 2 and a half hears left on my warranty. |
