Waiting for engine parts has unfortunatly got me thinking of other mods.

http://www.grungle.com/endlessair.html

This got me thinking, basically a moded AC compressor.

And then I was in bunnings and they're selling a cheap workshop compressor with tiny 20L tank for $79.

Makes me think a second hand AC compressor, bit of fab for the brackets, then get one of these cheap compressors, throw the motor/compressor off it and you've got almost everything you need for a pretty amazing on-board air system.

The cheap compressor already has an pressure switch to turn the pump on/off, its got a fail safe valve, pressure regulator etc.

I can tell you the $79 craftsman portable compressor here in the states (120v ac) has like a 3 gallon tank with a built in handle, and would be perfect for a vehicle air tank.

It has all the fittings, the regulator, and the pressure switch. Since the cheap ass integrated motor seized, I will be using everything else on the compressor for an endless air setup myself.

I think you are on to a great idea, you can't buy a decent regulator and pressure switch for $79 with the compressor you get the tank too.

The only drawback I can see, is that the parts seem a little on the cheesey side. I would Also take everything apart and check the wiring too. They are assembled cheap and sometimes the wire connections are shit, with loose wires, and a little uninsulated let wire sticking out.

Here's what I am talking about, is this what you are thinking about Harv?

I here there is a mod you can do to the sanden's to make them retain their oil, rather than have to have an oiler, and a dryer in line. I will find the link in the morning (3 am here).

If vehicles there ever came with York compressors, those are highly sought after here for their ability to retain their oil, and their high output.

Also always check the clutch before you buy, the switching mechanisms, and the bearings like to both quit. I am always a bit sus of A/C compressors in used vehicles, as none of the rigs I bought ever had their A/C working when I got them.

Skyman I can see what the picture you've put up (doesn't work for some reason.) Sounds exactly like what you're talking about though.

bazook, aren't pretty much all the standard AC compressors sanden? I was going to try and get one that had the old V-belt pully so I could run it off the belt that use to have the viscous fan on it (and now has nothing.)

You can tell a Sanden, it will have a alloy tag with sanden written on it.

Here's the compressor I am talking about

Ok so I've also been thinking about this, and was wondering why nobody had hooked up an air compressor pump of one of these little compressors, I know they are big but with a bit of fab work and a longer belt you'd be away, of course the clutch issue would be the hardest part but then where there's a will there's a way.

Yeah that's the same sort of cheap chinese made jobby as we get here. Except the one bunnies is selling at the moment is a 5gal tank, so a little bigger.

I run a Sanden compressor on my Zuk. It runs into a little truck air brake tank that's probably only 5 litres. Its controlled automatically with a pressure switch and I've connected it to the idle up circuit so the engine runs at 2000 rpm when the compressor is running.

It pumps up tyres fast. At 2000 rpm the compressor runs continuously. Running any faster wont fill the tyres quicker as the valve stem is the restriction, and the compressor just clicks on and off.

They are rated at something like 8cfm @ 100psi

Wow... that is almost, if not better than my shop air. You could use an paint sprayer with something like that.

The endless air (on board A/C compressor) sounds like it's the goods.

Yep, its pretty nice. It runs a 1/2" rattle gun for changing tyres etc. I also use an air duster gun for blowing mud out of the radiator before it dries and cakes in there.

cool as, could you post some pics of how/where you mounted the compressor?

Everything else is pretty straight forward and lots of write ups on the net how to do it. Just the mounting is the "interesting" bit.

I haven't got any pics of it mounted, but its on the exhaust side of the engine.

I made a bracket to mount the power steering pump right down low, with the compressor above it.
I had to swap pulleys on the p/s pump to a smaller one off a Baleno to fit it in between the engine and the chassis.

I had a bit of a look into this, apparently Sanden still sell them?

Also there's some mobs out there trying to charge LOTS of money for them!

If you're talking about the SD508, yes they're everywhere. You can by a new genuine one for shitloads, or a chinese rip off, or a second hand gobby.

Sanden SD507 or SD508s are the ones that have their own sumps. With a small mod you can set them up to run grease through a nipple too. Theres shite loads of Sanden models out there so dont just grab one with Sanden on the tag.

Sounds like a good idea. Then you can make a cheap version of them, copy every word of it,and post up on EBay for sale.

The bracket I made needs power steering installed, as the power steering pump acts as the adjustment / tensioner. You also need to swap the pump pulley for a smaller diameter Baleno one to fit it all in.
So its a bit of bitsa / specialized setup, but if there's interest I could make more.

Otherwise it probably wouldn't take too much for me to modify the design to work without power steering.

Chasing one of these compressors today, one wrecker has one and wants $100, another isn't sure but said to come for a look and it'd be $85 if he has one...

At least I can do all the stuff myself I suppose, still gonna be reasonably cheap.

Ok so I got a Sanden SD508 for $85, not too bad.

Only problem is I couldn't find one with a multi rib pulley (it's going in with a baleno engine so it needs to be 4pk)

I have the option to switch it for a Sanden SD7H15 (newer model of the sd709) with a multi rib pulley though anto86 reckons I shouldn't be running a 4pk on a 10pk pulley. I would have thought that if the ribs were the correct width and it was tracked correctly there should be no problem but if it is let me know for sure.

Other options are try to source the correct pulley for the front of the SD508, I'll take the pulley + clutch off the unit and take it to the bearing/pulley shop and see if there's anything in a 4pk available.

So long story short, can I run the 4pk (12mm or so wide) on a 10pk pulley (30mm or so wide) provided the ribbing is identical.

Thanks in advance, I know they will let me swap for the other unit, which from what I have read is identical internals to the sd709 (which is basically a 7 piston version of the sd508) but I don't want to swap to that and then not be able to use it.
