Coz I just bought one :P

A few questions about it.

Drove it down from perth and all was good.

Took it on the beach today and performed reasonably well.

It didnt come with an owners manual so if someone can tell me if there is anything I shouldnt do with 4wd, that would be good.

For example, Can I cahnge from 4L to 4H while moving?

Second gear works great on 4H but when i change to third, even if i am traveling at 60-70kms at 6000-8000RPM, it slowns sown to the point i have to change back to second. It just doesnt want to be in third or higher on the beach and am guzzling fuel in second.

Also, i get the burnt clutch smell every time i work the engine hard, like on boggy sand in 2H in second, revving the shit out of it, start to smell clutch.

I put tyres down to 15 psi.

Other than that, I have no problems :P

use low range in the sand... around 60kph in 3rd or 4th should have it in the sweet spot! i'm guessing that's what killed the clutch in the Vitara you had.

no shifting from 4L to 4H on the move or the other way, not 100% sure with the Jimny's but you should be able to drop into 4H from 2H while on the move... wheels straight ahead & below 60kph.

jimny's are less gay than coily's, but gayer than vitara's :thefinger:

Cheers Atari.

I was given the opposite advice on the suzuki forum.

They said use 4H on sand and nothing over second gear in 4L coz it burns the clutch.

Is that bs?

It's says in the manual that you can change from 2h to 4h as long as wheels are straight and under 100km but if you want to change to low be stationary.

Clutch is a weak point don't rev it to much in the sand to take off or you'll need to replace the bloody thing soon

Drive to the situation the more you drive on the sand the more you'll work out what is better for the ground your on keep playing and find what works better for you. I tend to be in low on the sand because I prefer low down response.

Jimny aren't gay they are awesome

I only ever use 4H for sand unless I'm stuck, but I seem to be in the minority. Drop the tyres to 10 psi at least and see how it goes.

i've done a lot of sand driving & i call bs... what forum? i gotta join & troll the fuckers

on hard flat sand you can get away with 4h, but anywhere it's soft & starting to load the vehicle up you're better off going back to low range, also there is a fine line between having momentum & too much speed... ask monkey & his banana shape front diff.

in the big dunes we have on the SE coast i'll spend the whole weekend in low range, mainly 2nd, 3rd & 4th, starting off in 1st Low with very little wheel spin is the trick, once you have a bit of speed up grab 2nd & try to get the thing up on the "plane" so its not bogging down.

Good.

I didnt enjoy driving in 4H then stopping to go to 4L to get through the exit into the car park that has soft sand.

It felt like i was revving high in second all day then changing to 4L whenever i started slowing down due to sand.

I thought, jimnys aint so great after all :P

I'll keep it in 4L in 3rd or 4th and hope my clutch doesnt fry.

See if i can find the thread on that other forum which is here: http://www.suzuki-forums.com/forum-index.php

in low range you shouldn't be using the clutch apart from changing gears & the reduction in low range offers you more torque.

all suzuki's love to rev, they're not a lazy torquey engine like a patrol or a diesel hilux

Thanks man.

Yeah, that all i use the clutch for.

I was just refering to advidce not to go fast in 4L if you want to keep your clutch.

Cant find that thread :P

You shouldnt be burning the clutch! reduce those tyre pressures until its nicer to drive and so the motor isnt working hard. I used to run 10psi with big mud tyres. Surely you can go the same with no problems.

I used high range also, but i had the power and gearing to drive the tyres easy, in 2wd on soft sand..

Jimny's are special.

Post subject:  Re: Jimnys Arent Gay

Totally agree with Atari, if done right you're clutch shouldn't get any sort of workout. Burning clutch = popping it at revs. HD clutch won't help either.

I tow a camper trailer in soft sand regularly and unless I'm on hard, low tide sand I just leave it in Low and use all five gears. They're close together so you don't have to rev-and-dump.

Suzuki Forum is definitely BS. x2 on wanting to see the thread.

If my clutch was slipping in low 3rd I'd be asking myself if its on the way out already.

Yes. You shouldn't have any clutch slippage in low range

FFS - again - enough with the gay thing. Putting "gay" in every post is far gayer than actually being gay.

PLEASE STOP. You are being an embarrassment to us straight people.

Steve.

imo you shouldnt need to do more than around 60 on the beach... so low range is where its at for nice easy on the car driving.

this is the last gay thread :)

I drove from buffalo beach, past belvidere to the cut.

The cut is blocked off by a fence that says no entry, burds are laying or some shit and the sand before the fence is really boggy.

I nearly got stuck down there because i didnt know about the fence until i was right in front of it and had to stop in the middle of the beach. Trying to U turn from there wasnt fun :P

But made it back.

Will just use 4L and be happy :P

4H is too gay for my purposes :)

your tyres are too hard.

honestly drop them to 10psi and you will have so much more fun in the sand.

and i would say your clutch is on it's way out... it will still last for a while yet as long as your easy on it.

Same! Hardly ever stop in high range. If not on the highway, I'm wheelin, so low range for me! even in sand im usually in low set!
