would not having the timing set properly effect fuel consumption? i never did it with timing light. its still at the point where ya put the distributer in to get it running.

If it starts easy and runs well enough to drive the timing can't be too far out. Look for another cause.
Have you checked the choke isn't stuck on?
Have you done a compression test?

i have done neither of them. which bits the choke on it?

Jas, if the timing is well retarded, below 5° say, it would give indications of enriched mix, plus use excess fuel.

Comp, if you don't know what bit the choke is on, you need some help from a mate, or someone willing to give a hand. If you are bugerizing around with little knowledge it is easy to come unstuck and cause a sad dollar day.

Your in brizzy, lots of people around there, ask, someone will come.

Possibly yes, but it would be difficult to start and the OP didn't mention that.

i know al ilttle bit about it. pulled motor and gearbox out and fitted new clutch and head and water pump and put it all back in and installed carby and fuel pump by myself

starts perfect and runs perfect. does all the hills and roots chix. just used lots of fuel and fouls the plugs

might compression test it. its been rebuilt sometime, apparently about 50 000kms. saw the oversize pistons when i pulled it down.

The choke is the flap that blocks the primary barrel at the top of the carby.
It should only sit horizontal when the engine is COLD.
As the engine warms up, the water warms the wax pellet and makes it expand pushing the choke open.
You may need to wire the choke open.
