Hi All I'm new to this forum and got myself a new 2011 Grand Vitara 1.9TD, What i would like to know if it's a good idea to fit a Turbo Timer to my rig
has anybody done this ? whats a good brand to fit? can you get a plug and play harness?

if youve got the cash i cant see why you shouldnt. they reckon they're so the turbo can spool down to prevent it spinning dry when the engines turned off and no oils pumping. I'm no expert by any means but unless you turn off the engine straight away after its been revving at 5 grand i dont see how it can be spinning that fast to keep going for very long. maybe someone else can enlighten me? maybe save your $300 and get something decent and just let your engine idle for 10-20 secs before you turn it off? cars have been made for years without them and dont seem to have any troubles so meh. now ive just confused myself... |

It's a cool down function - it's not hard to cook the oil in a turbo is its turned off whilst mega hot. Allowing some time after shutdown allows the oil flow to cool the turbo before oil flow stops. However, I have read that turbo timing is largely redundant with water cooled turbos. Many turbos of the 80's and 90's (especially aftermarket turbos) weren't water cooled. With water cooling, convection coolant flow still works after the engine is shutdown and no special cool down period is required. My last two road cars are both aggressively turbocharged (07 STi and current X3 3.0D) and there is no requirement for cool down. Steve |

Diesel GVs have a sort of turbo timer already built in. You may have noticed a high pitched whine coming from the engine after you stop, that's the electric pump that continues to feed coolant to the turbo after shut down. |

A turbo timer is probably as useful as an aftermarket blow-off valve.... |

Aftermarket blow off valves have stiffer spring which keep it closed during high boost e.g, sr20 standard blow off valve ( plum back) will open up at anything over 14 psi causing boost leak and reduced power. So I would say they are pretty useful. On topic : turbo timer not needed. |

I'm more talking the countless rb, sr, ca engines running 7 psi but with aftermarket blow-off valves. No need for a turbo buddy but if that sort of thing floats your boat then you may also like to consider a pod filter, a cannon muffler and some blue mesh for the front bumper.

Hi Steve I have Noticed a whining sound after the engine is turned off , so it's some kind of factory timer to keep it cool, I don't understand how it would work with the engine turned off if it's the case might save myself a few dollars, should ask Suzuki direct and see what their 2 cents is worth Cheers
